ExaminationofUNSTGoal
ThroughoutthefirsttermofthePortlandFreshmanInquiryclass,welearnedaboutthe
fouroftheUNSTgoals.Thesegoalswere:InquiryandCriticalThinking,Communication,
EthicalIssuesandSocialResponsibility,andtheVarietyofHumanExperience.Ichosethelast
goalbecauseIfeltthatalloftheassignmentsandwhatwediscussedinclasscoveredthisgoal
completely.
TheVarietyofHumanExperiencegoalisfocusedonthestudentslearningaboutatopic,
fromdifferentviews.ForthefirsttermourPortlandFRINQclasswelearnedabouttheearly
yearsofPortland.Weinvestigatedfromviewsofdifferentgroupsofpeople.Thegroupswho's
perspectivewelookedfromvariedinrace,gender,cultureandclass.Thisgoalisfocusedon
learningaboutonetime,placeorevent,fromtheviewsofavarietyofdifferentgroups.
Ibelievethatmyassignment,whichislookedatfromtheviewsoftheAfricanAmericans
inPortlandinthe1940s,meetsthisUNSTgoalthebest.Theresearchisaboutearlyyearsin
Portland,whichvariedinclass,raceandgender.LearningaboutPortlandfromother
perspectivesgavethetimewefocusedonseemtohavemoredepth.TheAfricanAmericanswho
livedinPortlandhadamuchdifferentviewthanthoseofdifferentraces.Becauseoftheirrace,
theywerealsoplacedinacertaineconomicclass,anditwasmadenearlyimpossibleforthemto
movetoupperclass.
Notonlywasthisaviewfromadifferentrace,andclass,butalsogender.TheAfrican
Americansingeneralwerelimitedtothejobstheywereallowedtohold,butthewomenwere
limitedevenmorethanthemen.Nomatterwhatlevelofeducationtheyhad,thewomenwere
limitedtojobssuchaschildcare,maidsorhousecleaners.Thisassignmentcoveredthisgoal
becauseitcoveredthevarietyofdifferentgroups.LearningaboutPortlandfromthisperspective
enhancedmyunderstandingofthediversexperiencepeoplefaced.
