ELAP participants generally spend between five and ten hours atthe host organization per week, Conflicts with ISA course schedules can occur, and participants should keep the time requirements oftheir ELAP placement in mind when finalizing their class schedule in-country. Should a scheduling conflict arise, the ELAP On-Site Coordinator will assist the participant to establish a schedule that works best with their academic courses and placement responsibilities. One to two weeks after the start ofthe ISA semester, the on-site staff will accompany each participant to the host organization forthe introductory meeting. ‘The on-site staff will demonstrate hhow to use the public transportation system to arrive at the organization, introduce the participant to the supervisor, finalize the participant's schedule and responsibilities, and sign the Commitment Agreement ‘This form, which is signed by both the host organization and participant during the Placement Introduction, outlines the schedule and responsibilities that are agreed to by both the organization ‘and the participant, The signing of the agreement clarifies the expectations of both partes in order ta avoid miscommunication, ‘To ensure that both parties comply with the Commitment Agreement, a Log of Hours is kept with a record of the participant's hours and activities. The Log of Hours is initialed by both the participant and the supervisor, and then submitted to the ELAP On-Site Coordinator for review every two weeks. ELAP has developed a series of individual reflections which participants complete through their online portal every two weeks. The reflections assist participants in identifying key cultural differences while encouraging them to step outside their comfort zone to understand the importance of seemingly insignificant daily events, In addition, these reflections highlight the relationship between international issues and these faced by the participant's home community (On the weeks without Individual Reflective Essays, ELAP On-Site Coordinators facilitate group discussions to encourage participants to ponder the social implications of their experience abroad, The discussions last a minimum of one hour and can take many forms ~ such as visit to local businesses, organizations or historical sites; hosting or attending local speaking events: or discussing topics relevant to gaining a better understanding of the host country or global community. Im an effort to maintain quality and assess all facets of the ELAP experience, the supervisor will ‘complete an evaluation providing professional feedback regarding the participant’s contribution 10 the organization, The evaluation highlights goals achieved, professionalism demonstrated, and successful completion of projects andor initiatives as established by the supervisor. Each ELAP participant receives a certificate demonstrating the successful completion of their ‘program and compliance with the Commitment Agreement. The participant receives this certificate indicating the location of the program and the number of hours completed, ‘After the completion of the ELAP experience, the ELAP Portfolio is mailed to the participant's permanent address, The purpose of this portfolio isto present a comprehensive view of one’s ‘experience abroad as well as provide a tangible representation of the ELAP experience. Perhaps you are headed back to the US to continue your university studies; maybe you're a recent graduate who will be looking to break into the job market upon return. You may even be staying in-country to participate in an academic program or travel on your own, In any case, this is the time to reflect back on your overall experience abroad as weil as to reflect forward into ‘your future, You may consider the following as you write an essay of at least 200 words reflecting upon your overall experience: Compare your feelings at your time of arrival in-country to your time of departure. How have your career/personal goals changed in light of your experience? ‘What did you leam about yourself through your experience? How did you lear it? What skills have you acquired (physical, academic or relational)? Which of your program goals have been met? How have you achieved them? Which ave not been met, and why?” ‘What do you want to remember about your ELAP experience? ‘What do you plan to do with your newly acquired knowledge? vvvVY vv My ELAP experience was one of the best experiences of my life and it something that I carry with me for the rest of my life. The one day a week that I spent in the office was enough for me to become part of the team and become familiar with the routine of the organization. I was able to get to really get to know one of the entrepreneurs, Isabel, and a the pre-incubation process. I became familiar with her business and the aspirations she has to see her business grow. She valued every single input I had and looked up to the knowledge that I could bring to the table. Despite the fact that I was not familiar with the legal issues in Chile I was able to give advice but also learn by listening and being in the weekly meetings. My favorite part about the work was seeing the aspiring entrepreneurs or current business courses truly motivated to sce their business grow. I recall people calling the office asking about the courses offered and ask with sincere interest to begin the course or try to become part of the consulting service. It would bring a smile to my face to see how hard these people work to sustain themselves and how humble they really are because these small businesses are the core to any economy. Experiential Learning Abroad Programs * 512.777.2868 * elap@myelap.com * www.myelap.com ola PuRtOsE Lastly, write a letter of at least 300 words to your future self about your experience. You may draw from the prompts above or focus on the things that you do not wish to forget about your ELAP program. Within 6 months of your departure, the ELAP Coordinator will mail the letter to you to remind you of your experience and the goals you set for yourself. Dear Me, Working at Accion Emprendedora was a wonderful experience that really allowed me to get to know another aspect of Chilean culture. I was able to live with a Chilean family and working in a Chilean ONG and get to know some of the entrepreneurs of Chile. I really enjoyed being part of an organization that was determined to help and assist business owners and teach them courses that allow them to improve the structure of their business. My favorite part about this volunteer work was that I was related to what I am majoring in and I was genuinely interested in discovering ways how people could improve the structure of their business. Even though as a career I am not looking into joining an ONG I think that I would get more personal satisfaction by contributing to an organization like this back in the U.S. Currently long term wise I am considering becoming a financial planner because of the help I would be giving people. Ihave discovered that volunteering and helping others is something that I have to continue doing or else I will feel something is missing in my life. I have participated in some kind of volunteering for the past 3 4 years and I greatly enjoy assisting others in any way I can. While I am in Italy it may be a little difficult to continue this work but upon my return to my home university I plan to continue assisting people. Although I won’t be helping out at a place like Accion Emprendedora I am hoping in the future I can make contributions to small entrepreneurs, after all they are a core part of my life since my father has had his own business for the past 10 years. Sincerely, Myrna leaving Chile Twas taught that the world had a lot of problems; that I could struggle and change them: that imellectual and material gifis brought the privilege and responsibility of sharing with others less fortunate; and that service is the rent each of us pay for a living...the very purpose of life, and not something you do in your spare time or afier you have reached your personal goals.” Marian Wright Edelman President and Founder of US-based Children's Defense Fund Experiential Learning Abroad Programs * 512.777.2868 * elap@myelap.com * www.myelap.com viap. EXPERIENCE Wink g for Re-Entry As the end of your program approaches, you have probably begun thinking about your retum home. Many individuals experience a whirlwind of activity and changes upon arrival, often jumping into holiday celebrations, the start of a new semester, moving to a parent's house and then immediately to campus housing...Jeaving them unable to adequately reflect upon their retum. Since time upon re-entry may be scarce, it is best to begin thinking about your return home even before you depart, Write a 300-word essay reflecting about the ways that you have changed and the ways your home has changed. You may consider the following prompts as you waite: In what ways have you changed? In what ways might your friends and family have changed? How would you like my family and friends to treat you when you return home? ‘What are the lessons you have learned that you never want to forget? Many say that re-entry shock is more challenging than initial culture shock. What are some things you might do to make the transition easier? vvvVY Arriving into Chile I had some general background knowledge about Latin Americans, given that I am first generation Mexican-American, but I found myself learning about a brand new culture, I learned about the food, family traditions, political views, econo’ situations and festive celebrations Even though I arrived to Chile as a native Spa speaker I found that I still suffered through culture shock and extreme homesickness. I also had an unfortunate homestay family situation where I felt that it was not a match for me. I went through a couple of tough times with my homestay mother and I wasn’t greatly enjoying my time in the home. However, since I wasn’t completely unhappy I thought I was just suffering through homesickness but after moving 3 months and moving into a new home I discovered that moving was the best thing that was decided for me. I learned that it is okay to think about yourself first and make decisions based on what could bring you happiness instead of trying to settle yourself for what you think is the suitable thing to do. I also was able to reflect on what things I could do to improve my communication with family members so my independent lifestyle may not come off as isolating, As students we are only here in the country for a couple months and I discovered that it is important to make every moment count and put behind you the moments that brought you down, I consider myself a stronger and more confident person than I was when I first arrived to Chile. Not many people could leave their home country for a long period of time and I have come to acknowledge the strength that I have demonstrated by overcoming those tough times. It is important to bond and empathize with them and their reality to make areal connection. In this activity, the participants were asked to review and respond to a series of quotes about service, civic engagement and poverty, relating the quotes to issues on-site versus in their home communities. Some questions that were discussed were: How would you define poverty? What causes it? Is poverty relative? How do people become homeless? Should all people work for a living? Would you pay more taxes if this would eliminate poverty by creating jobs for everyone? © Do you believe there is a correlation between poverty and crime? Since our work relates us to people only in a particular context (school, clinic, rehabilitation center, etc.) we can only see a brushstroke, a percentage, of the final picture. That's why, in this activity, statistics and quotes are an important factor that gives us the understanding of local and global reality of people who are in socio-economic disadvantage. All the decisions we make are the perfect route that led us to this point in our lives In some cases we take these routes according to our own impulses or desires. In other cases there are external factors that are charting the way forward. An interesting exercise to do when we reach a new "destination" is to stop and think about how I got there, which factors in the past have influenced and paved the way to get there and how to move forward. Every moment is unique, therefore through reflection we can extract the most out of the experience to transform it into an episode that will transform our lives forever Its all learning and although this trip could be more or less than what we originally imagined, all of ovr experiences contribute to mark a new spot on the map. Participants were instructed to draw a representation of how they got to their current ‘place’, including what people, events, decisions and other influences impacted their decision to participate in ELAP. They also included visual representations of where their journey will lead them after their ELAP program. Experiential Learning Abroad Programs * 512.777.2868 © elap@myelap.com + www.myelap.com ELAP GROUP DISCUSSION SUMMARY ELAP Coordinator: Paula Calderon ELAP Site: Valparaiso, Chile Date: October 25th, 2013 Theme of Discussion: How does where you live influence how you live? Summary: ‘Where we live influences how we live. This happens with people living in underdeveloped countries or world powers, in rural or cosmopolitan cities. That's something we all have in common. In our case, for example, Chile and the United States are characterized by a wide range of climates, geography, means of transportation, houses, etc. However, the specific characteristics of each one of these elements are very different from one country to another. Participants were asked to choose one location and think about the following situations specific to that geographic space: the effect of weather and climate on people’s daily lives, the effect of geographic features (mountains, rivers, forests, oceans, etc.) on daily life, the kind of transportation that is available to people, the ways in which people earn a living, the types of homes in which people live, the kinds of roads on which people travel, and the availability of water and other necessities of life. That's why, through a series of questions that lead us to reflect and share experiences, we can compare and make connections between what characterizes each reality in which we find ourselves, think about how other cultures are influenced and imagine how different we would be if we were born or if we lived elsewhere. Questions that were discussed were: © Can you think of some differences in lifestyle based on locetion within the United States? © Can you think of some differences in lifestyle based on location within your host country? ‘What connections can you draw between birthplace/nationality and privilege? Do you think that one of the factors (listed in worksheet) holds more weight than the others in determining how one lives? Do you think the weight of each factor is dependent upon the country? © Do any of the factors have long-term effects, or are they only relevant to right now? Studying and working abroad always would be an advantage over others who haven't gotten any international experience. That's why it is important to learn how to communicate and share one’s, ELAP experiences on a resume ot a job interview. ‘The participants completed an exercise that helped them reflect on their experiences in their placement in Chile and pi a single situation that helped them grow personally and/or professionally. They wrote down their biggest cultural mistakes, funniest moment, scariest moment, most thrilling moment, most moving memory, and an important relationship they made ‘while in Chile. Then, they narrowed down these experiences to focus on some stories and ‘moments that they would like to highlight as skills they leamed. Through the exercises mentioned above and questions and reflection, the conversation lead the participants to identify skills and qualities developed during the program with the purpose of lighting some of the situations that helped the student to grow personally and professionally. This will also help to formulate good responses for future employers regarding experiences abroad.
