Problem Test Mid-Term+

Problems 1 to 3 are compulsory, carrying equal points as Total 50 points.

Problem 4 is optional, for bonus 10 points.
1.
Consider the spring-mass-damper system defined by (use SI units)

Determine the system is under-damped, critically damped, or over-damped.

Compute the magnitude and phase of the steady-state response.

2.
Derive the equation of motion of the simple spring-mass-pendulum system shown below.
Pendulum-rod is mass less. The angular deflection of the pendulum is so small that the
linear deflection of spring occurs horizontally. Consider that the sum of potential energy
and kinetic energy is constant.

3.
A large rotating machine causes the floor of a factory to oscillate sinusoidally. A punch
press is to be mounted on the same floor. The displacement of the floor at the point where
(cm). The press is
the punch press is to be mounted is measured to be

mounted on a rubber fitting of stiffness 40 kN/m, damping 900 N.s/m. The total mass of
the punch press and rubber fitting is 3000 kg. Determine at resonance (a) the displacement in punch press transmitted due to the floor, and
(a) the force transmitted to the punch press.

4.
Consider a typical unbalanced machine problem with machine mass of 120 kg, stiffness
of 800 kN/m, and a damping value of 500 kg/s. The out-of-balance force is measured to
be 374 N at a running speed of 3000 rpm.
(a) Determine the amplitude of motion due to the out-of-balance force.
(b) If the out-of-balance mass estimated to be 1% of the total mass, estimate the value of
eccentricity of the mass.
