Nation and state-building in the Albanian case in the beggining of 21st Century
Nation and state-building are not two parallel processes that automatically go hand to hand with each other. Neither one automatically spills over the other. Although the opinions of scholars here are divided and the debate still open, in the theroretical literature of the nationalism studies, the opinion that modern state institutions are the ones who have created the national consciousness on the first place, dominates. However we do not have a monolithic view since scholars are divided over the most important factors determining national consciusness, with some focusing at Industrial Revolution (Gellner 1986), others as French Revolution (Hobsbawm), while yet others, like Anderson (2006) look at print capitalism as the most important factors that invented nations where they did not exist. On the other hand, the historiographies of the Balkan countries have traditionally taken the primordialist account that nations have always existed and the patiently waited for the modern states as a reward of their centuries long struggles. In this paper, I look diachronically at the Albanian case in the beginning of 21st Century although Albania and Kosovo and strongly conditioned by different political histories and their different state-formation and nation-building trajectories.
