Vocabulary: Part I
Claim: To state or assert that something is the case
Evidence: Specific support for a claim, examples included expert opinion, statistics, quotations,
and graphs.
Research: The process of locating information from a variety of sources
Citation: Giving credit to the author who wrote the source information
Counterclaim/Rebuttal: An opposing claim, to go against what another group is saying is true
Tone: The way of sounding, tone of voice
Formal Style: Style of writing and speaking that can be used in business or academics
Rhetorical Appeal: Use of emotional, ethical, and logical arguments to persuade.
Logos: Rhetorical appeal to reason or logic, examples include statistics or facts
Pathos: Using word choice that adds emotional appeal to your writing or speaking

Part II
The second part of the quiz will contain a persuasive debate. You will read the debate and
annotate the text. You will then fill out the graphic organizer to show me that you understand
how to locate claims, reasons, and evidence in a text. The graphic organizer will look like the
one below. Practice filling it out with the reality T.V. debate.
