LAKE SUPERIOR STATE UNIVERSITY July 5, 2013, Dear Reader: Lake Superior State University (LSSU) has offered the Women in Technology summer one-week residential program each year since 1992 for gifted and talented young women in grades 8 through 11. This program provides young women with the opportunity to experience engineering and technology topics. This letter of completion for Lauren Evert describes the student selection process and the educational activities of the program. Admission to the program is competitive and limited to 16 participants. ‘The selection process is based upon the student’s academic accomplishments, educational goals, a personal profile written by the student, and the recommendation of a teacher or counselor. ‘This year we had numerous applications from all over Michigan and beyond. ‘The average GPA of the participants was 3.8, average ACT score was 23 (most having taken the ACT in middle school), average number of excellent extra-curricular activities was five, and some applications had as many as four letters of recommendation. Because of Lauren’s excellent academic and extracurricular achievements, she was selected to participate in the LSSU’s 2013 Women in Technology summer program. During the one-week experience in the Women in Technology program, the activity-based instruction included Robotics, Computer-Aided Design, Electronics, Satellite Based Global Positioning Systems, Computer Animation, Impromptu Engineering Design and Web Page Development. Most of these sessions which were taught by faculty and staff members of LSSU revolved around the use of computers in engineering and technology. ‘The students also completed a final project of their choice that was based on one of the earlier sessions. ‘The final project was presented to all who were present at the closing session. Although the problems were challenging, Lauren did an outstanding job at overcoming all obstacles, to detive a workable solution. With no prior preparation, she easily comprehended the various technologies and concepts presented to her and demonstrated why she is (and will continue to be) a high achiever. She is a talented individual who can make significant contributions to society, and should be given future opportunities to show her capabilities, a - rofessor, School of Engineering and Technology Director, LSSU Roboties Center Director, Summer Engineering Camps Sincerely, 650 W, Easterday Ave., Sault Ste, Marie, MI 49783 ‘Telephone: 906-682-6841 - Fax: 906-635-2111 wwwissuedu
