UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, 2014 Jazz Audition Information and Instructions AUDITION TIMES (All auditions will be in Libby Gardner Hall room 190) Thursday, August 21 1:00-4:30pm Rhythm Section (drums, bass, piano, guitar) Friday, August 22 1:00-4:30pm Horns (saxophone, trombone, trumpet) Monday, August 25 8:35-11:35am All students having conflicts with Aug. 21 and 22 AUDITION MATERIALS | All players will perform the following during auditions: I. Prepared selection(s) found in the appropriate instrument audition packets Instrument specific selections which are listed below Sight-reading selection Improvisation selection Alll players are expected to improvise, but it is not mandantory, All players choosing t prepare one of the following tunes from memory (melody and solo changes): I. Bb blue (stow or fast) play-along found on Aebersold vol. 2 2. Doxy play-along found on Aebersold vol. 8 3. Solar play along found on Aebersold vol. 7 Drums 1. Prepare examples of the following styles Medium swing (with sticks and brushes) Up-tempo swing Ballad with brushes Bossa Samba Straight eighths (ECM) 2. Alternate between 8 bars of time and 8 bars of soloing in a medium swing feel Piano 1, Comp through Bb rhythm changes (medium swing) 2, Comp through Body and Soul (ballad tempo, chords and melody if possible) Bass 1. Walk bass line through Bb rhythm changes (medium swing) Guitar 1, Comp through Bb rhythm changes (medium/up-tempo swing) in Freddie Green style 2.
