Auxiliary View
Auxiliary views are created by positioning a new line
of sight relative to the object
Auxiliary view
is an
orthographic
view that is
projected onto
any plane other
than on of the
six principle
views

Fold-Line Method

Glass box and six principle views

Fold-Line Method

Glass box with special

auxiliary view

Fold-Line Method

Phantom lines
between the views is
called fold lines

Fall2005- ENGR 3200U

Fold-Line Method

Changing the position of object in the glass box

Reference Plane Method

Reference Plane method is a
technique that locates a plane
relative to the object, instead
of suspending the object in
the glass box

This single plane is then used

to take the measurements to
create the auxiliary view

Fall2005- ENGR 3200U

Reference
Plane Method
Transferring the
distance from the
normal views to
the auxiliary view
Reference Plane can
be positioned
anywhere relative to
the object

Reference
Plane Method
Remember the Following:
1- Reference plane or the fold line is always drawn perpendicular
to the projection lines
2- Transfer measurements are always taken perpendicular to the
reference or the fold line
3-Refrence planes always appear on edge in the views adjacent
to the central view but never in two adjacent views
4-Distances from the object to the reference or fold lines in the
auxiliary view and the measuring view are same

Auxiliary View Classification

Auxiliary Views (AVs) are created by positioning a
new line of sight relative to the object
It is possible to create any number of successive auxiliary views,
including a new AV from an existing AV.
Therefore AVs are classified as:
1- Primary
2-Secondary
3-Tertiary

Auxiliary View Classification

Primary Auxiliary View is a single view projected from one of the
six principle views
Secondary Auxiliary View is a single view projected from a
primary auxiliary views
Tertiary Auxiliary View is a single view projected from a
secondary or another tertiary auxiliary view

Auxiliary View Classification

Auxiliary Views are also classified by the space
dimension shown in the true size
1) Depth Auxiliary View
(Projected from the front view)

(Projected from the profile view)

15

Labelling Convention
Labels normally describe the nature of the fold line or the reference plane

Fall2005- ENGR 3200U

Based on the views name

16

Labelling Convention
Or based on the projection plane

Partial Auxiliary View

When only the feature of interest is drawn in an
auxiliary view and not the whole object , the view is
called a partial auxiliary view
