Oxyhoods
Purpose:

To deliver regulated concentrations of oxygen to neonatal patients

Descriptions:

The physician will write an order for oxygen via hood as evidenced by a
decreased SpO2 or decreased PaO2. The respiratory therapist will set up the
oxyhood with humidity at the prescribed FiO2, or within the prescribed
parameters.

Indications:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Hazards:

1. Hyperoxia can result in Retinopathy of Prematurity

2. The unnoticed exhaustion of the oxygen supply to the hood may cause
hypoxemia, bradycardia and/or apnea.
3. Blocked exit holes or inadequate flow could cause expired C02 to build up.
4. Observe fire and safety precautions.
5. Unheated medical gas may cause cold stress in neonates.
6. Overheated medical gas may cause apnea in neonates.

Equipment:

1. Appropriately sized oxyhood with weight

2. Allegiance Isothermal Adult Inspiratory Line with heated wire (Cat# 1005H05)
3. Allegiance Oxygen tubing adapter (Cat# 5550-504)
4. Fisher/Paykel Heater/Humidifier with chamber and temp probes
5. 1 Liter bag of sterile water for inhalation
6. Oxygen tubing
7. Oxygen analyzer
8. O2/Air blender with flowmeter and x-mas tree adapter

Personnel:

Respiratory therapists and technicians

Procedure:

1. Gather equipment.
2. Set up Fisher/Paykel heater with chamber and sterile distilled water.
3. Attach oxygen tubing to oxygen tubing adapter and flowmeter.
4. Attach tubing adapter to chamber.
5. Attach inspiratory line with heated to the humidifier and the hood.
6. Attach temp probe to inspiratory line at the chamber and the hood.
7. Set prescribed O2 concentration on blender.
8. Set flow to 6-8 liters per minute.
9. Place hood over infant.
10. Place calibrated 02 analyzer under hood near the patient's head.
11. Adjust oxygen concentration as necessary.
12. Monitor and maintain temperature at the T-piece adapter at 34-37C.
13. Document according to policy.

Hypoxemia
Increased work of breathing
Cold stress.
Respiratory distress
Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn

Infection Control:
1. Oxyhoods are for single patient use
2. Clean the weight, heater, and analyzer with disinfectant.
