What is Resource Depletion?

Consumption of a resource faster
than it can be replenished
Most commonly used in reference to:
- Farming
- Fishing
- Mining
- Logging & Deforestation
- Water resources

Reasons for Resource

Overconsumption ofDepletion
resources

Population Explosion
Slash & burn agricultural practices
Technological & Industrial
Development
Habitat Degradation (loss of biodiversity)
Irrigation
Mining for minerals & oils
Pollution or contamination of
resources

Consumerism

Also defined as eating the future

Human nature to survive major cause of environmental crisis

Failure to recognize that the physical resources are finite

Humans expand into available territory and use up available resources

similar to a bacterial culture on a plate of leftover food

Growth of humans similar to spread of cancer which will ultimately

lead to global collapse & catastrophe

Mining

Damages the environment destruction of habitat due to removal of topsoil

Chemicals leaching into groundwater

Air & Radioactive Pollution

Depletes finite resources (Finite amount of copper in the Earths crust)

Destruction of natural resources (land, forest, mountains)

Erosion of land after mining

Hazardous waste tailings & ground water

Overfishing

Fishing Central to livelihood of almost 200 million people

Rapid growth in Aquaculture farming & stocking of aquatic organisms

Global depletion of fish stocks

Over 70% of worlds fish species are either fully exploited or depleted Food &
Agriculture Organization

95% fall in global fish population of Cod, Haddock & Flounder

Increase in illegal and unregulated fishing worldwide

Increase in destructive fishing techniques causes destruction of marine mammals

& ecosystems

Logging
Cutting, skidding & loading of trees or logs onto
trucks
Tree-length logging, whole tree logging, cut-to length
logging are the different methods used
Felled logs are then transported to sawmills, paper
mills or other factories
Illegal Logging by Timber Mafia
Destructive logging practices reduce forests ability
to carry out vital environmental & ecological functions
Watershed management, soil erosion, impacts on
marine environment, loss of bio-diversity

Earth provides enough

to satisfy every mans
needs, but not every
mans greed.
