The frst stepin developing adatabase for industrial coating material i to identity the parameters that are essential for characterizing coating material ident fiers and properties. The Society for Protective Coatings! ‘Computer-Integrated Knowledge System Network (SSPC! CIKS) Joint Coating Working Group has prepared this guide {or formatting data on coating material for use in preparing product data sheets in hardcopy format and computerized databases. Significant benelits will be realized due to the increased emphasis on the electronic representation and exchange ofinformation. The guide will provide a consistent forma that will imply data transfer among coating industry manufactures, coating suppliers, and coating users. The benefits wil include an increased awareness ofthe proper- ties of coating material through consistent terminology and te ideniication of data elements, and the abilly 10 &- change product data represented in computerized systems such a8 databases. The development of this guide is consistent with the principles laid down by ASTM Commitee -49 an" Computerization of Material and/Chemical Property Data."The organization ofthe guide was strongly influenced by ASTM E 1309 (Guide for Identitication of Composite Materials in Computerized Material Properly Databases) land ASTM E 1338 (Guide for Identification of Metals. and ‘Alloys in Computerized Material Property Databases) 1.2 OBJECTIVE: The objective of this document is to provide a general structure for coating product data. Product dala includes manufacturer deniers, physical properties, performance parameters, and recommendations on use. ‘This guide is intended to simply the exchange of similarly complete sets of data between different computerized data bases and to promote a consistent representation for the ‘exchange of coating produet data in paper form. Itsuggests the subject matter to be included in a coating material product database, iis not intended to be an all-inclusive list, of data tobe stored anditisnotadatabase. Implementation Of this guide does not have to include all the data elements listed within, and there are no constraints on how data shoul be displayed in specitic databases. ‘The guide presents parameters needed to characterize industrial coating product data. It includes data elements {fiekis) needed to uniquely identity a coating material. describe its properties, and to report manufacturer's recom- mendations an its use. Po: Me Society for r 1 2005 Use of Industrial Coating Material Product Databases 2. Terminology 2.1 TERMS SPECIFIC TO INDUSTRIAL COATING MATERIAL: Terms specific to industrial coating material Industrial coating material is defined in Steel Structures Painting Manual, Volume 1, Appendix 8. Other industrial coating material related terms usedin this guide are defined In documents listed in Section 5. 2.2 TERMS USED IN THIS GUIDE: Terms used to scribe the companents of an industrial coating system Include primer, intermediate, and topcoat. A diagram show- ing the components is presented in Figure 1. In practice, vwhen describing a coating system, itis assumed that mule tiple representations (e.g, product data sheets, data files, data records) ofthis guide willbe necessary. For example, € database record could contain product data on a primer, intermediate, or topcoat. The database records could re- side ina single database file orin separate tiles, designated "primer datafile, ""inlermediate coal dat file," or"topcoat data fle.” A database consists of data files that are com- posed of data segments and data elements. Data element numbers ‘are considered a functional part of the guide and may be used for data element reference. The first three digits ofthe data element number identity the data segment. The two digits following the decimal point identily the specific data clement within adata segment. A data element number that Contains "XX" following the decimal points used to denote multiple occurrences (e.g. properties, tests) for anindividual data element. 2.26 Data element name: a descriptive term or tlle that designates the type of information or data to be reported in the data element 2.2.7 Data element type: a designation of “essential “essential it applicable", or “desirable” that reflects the significance of the data element entry, Note: Data elements are designated “essential” they are necessary to make a meaningful comparison of product data trom aifferent sources. A comparison of data from different sources may stil be possible il essential informa tion is omitted, but the value af the comparison may be really reduced 22.8 Data element format: the presentation style used to report information or data Note: Alphanumeric, loating point, and special entry formals may be speciied in this guide for use In reporting information, unit designations, numerical values, and test results, 3. Data Segments 3.1. Introduetion: Seven data segments represent ‘categories of information that are necessary for the identi cation of an industrial coating and for recording its product data. They are ‘* Product description * Intended use + Physical properties ‘* Mixing and application + Key performance parameters + Saiety data + Supplemental information Tus Fb 22 145003 2009 ‘SSPC-Guide 13 December 1, 1998 Each data segments identified and defined in Section 8.2.
