Melting & Dissolving

Melting means a change of state from solid to liquid. Such as, ice in a cup melting into water.
This is usually due to temperature.
Dissolving means to put a solid (solute) into a liquid solvent. Ex: sugar dissolving in water.
The sugar spreads out in between the water molecules. Dissolving is due molecules of the
solvent mixing with the molecules of the solute. Temperature can speed up this process
because the molecules move faster and you are able to dissolve more producing a saturated
solution or even a super saturated solution.
The easiest way to remember is melting is due to temperature, and dissolving involved a solid
and a liquid being mixed.

3 facts about dissolving:

Its generally a slow process

It can be endothermic or exothermic
Its not considered a chemical change

3 facts about melting:

Melt because of heat

Melt better when run under cold water
Salt makes it melt better & faster
