What Makes a Great Teacher?

The author of this article is Maria Orlando, EdD. This article was published in
the Faculty Focus publication online;
http://www.facultyfocus.com/articles/philosophy-of-teaching/nine-characteristics-ofa-great-teacher/. The author breaks down the qualities or characteristics of a great
teacher into 9 points. She defines what makes a great teacher by stating what
should be obvious, that the individual works to ensure the students not only learn
the material but, have a nurturing environment that they can retain and enjoy what
they are learning and apply it. I will also add that they also bring to light that a great
teacher is also a great student. The author states that the points may not be allinclusive however, they are essential to what makes a great leader in a learning
environment. The 9 points are as follows:
1. A great teacher
2. A great teacher
classroom.
3. A great teacher
4. A great teacher
5. A great teacher
6. A great teacher
7. A great teacher
8. A great teacher
9. A great teacher

I completely agree with the article and the characteristics it points out. When
I was in cosmetology school our instructors were learning leaders. It really took the
stress out of the teacher student relationship. We were better able to focus on
becoming leaders ourselves as we learned our craft. A positively enforced learning
environment makes for a positive outcomes. If the instructor in invested in your
education as much as you or more it makes a difference. Know how your students
learn is a key part of teaching as well.
As far as an opposition to the article, I dont see a reason to be. Every point in
the article was positive and explained very well. I would not see a reason to take

offense by any of the statements offered. I believe these are also the keys to
success in any career as well.
