I have known Ms. Bolduc-Simpson since August of 2012. The courses I have taken with Professor Sheila Bolduc- ‘Simpson include: Composition I (ENC 1101), in class during the Fall 2012 semester; Composition II (ENC 1102), in class during the Spring 2013 semester; and Professional Writing (ENC 3250), online during the Fall 2014 semester, Professor Boldue-Simpson displays a thorough knowledge of technology and shares that knowledge with her students. From programs such as brainshark, slideshare, Voki, FGCU’s online learning system, Canvas, our previous one, Angel, and other online learning systems, Professor Bolduc-Simpson makes her courses very engaging and always utilizes the newest learning systems. In all of her courses, Professor Boldue-Simpson always made her announcements using Voki and had us students do an assignment using Voki. This was a fun way to do a project and us students really enjoyed it and enjoyed sharing our erazy Voki’s with our classmates as well. Another project we did was in Composition I. Professor Sheila Bolduc- ‘Simpson had us do a mid-term reflection that included powerpoint and a paper. But you did not just use a normal powerpoint system, you were to use an online learning system. For my midterm reflection that semester I chose to use Brainshark, which enables you to upload powerpoints, but the catch is you also add narration to it, which I really enjoyed, Professor Sheila Bolduc-Simpson was constantly having us use our writing skills and often taugh us new ones, as was her job in her courses, Composition I and II, weekly through the use of weebly blogging. Each week, occasionally a couple times a week, we created blogs using weebly, which allows you to type your blog, embed files, images, etc. You were creating a nice portfolio for yourself as well, which by the end of the semester was her goal for us, In my opinion this was the most beneficial system we used as now we can share our portfolios with ‘graduate schools and potential job employers. This approach to teaching was helping us to constantly be learning new things and I feel I learned most from these weekly blogs. Composition I and IT were more of an academic style learning approach, but I was also lucky enough to take Professional Writing with Professor Boldue-Simpson. Each week in this course ‘we were also learning a new style of writing, whether it be a business letter, a proposal, a memo, a complaint letter, etc. As students getting ready to enter into the professional setting, these varitings will be very beneficial to our professional careers. While this course was an online course, Professor Bolduc-Simpson always had examples and layouts for us to reference along with our writings so we could learn the writing styles and write our letters, etc. to the best of our abilities One unique characteristic of Professor Bolduc Simpson as a professor was her “open door policy.” As long as she was in her office, Professor Bolduc-Simpson’s door is open and she will gladly invite her students in to talk about whatever. Whether you want to talk about something regarding the course, your semester, or just life in general, Professor Boldue-Simpson’s door is always open. She is always in class early and doesn’t leave until the last person leaves. Her availability to assist students outside of class is incredible and as long as you communicate with her, she'll communicate with you. She has a huge respect and care for her students and she wants to make sure we are as successful as possible. Whether you have a face-to-face or online course, which I was grateful to have both with Mrs. Bolduc-Simpson, she always made sure you knew her door was open for you to ask questions and she always checked her email regularly and responded swiftly as well. I had classes with her in the Fall of 2012, Spring of 2013, and Fall 2014 and was lucky to build a relationship with Professor Boldue-Simpson. Even this semester, Spring 2015, though I do not have any classes with her, I make a point to stop by occasionally and say hi because she truly has had a huge impact on my college career, as I know many other students would say as well. She cares about her students and wants to see us succeed, ‘academically and in life. Professor Boldue-Simpson always included her students and got us involved in learning. All of her classes were hands-on and not much lecture; she would teach us what we needed to know, and then tell us to do it, always going around and helping us and making sure we were getting it. ‘She wouldn’t just teach the material, but she would get us to do what she was teaching, like setting up a blog, making a Voki. She made learning fun and engaging for her students. She wouldn't just teach about how to write a blog or create a glogster poster, or embed an item on our blogs, we would do these things. Professor Bolduc-Simpson teaches students who are freshman to students who are seniors. She deals with students of all ages. And one thing that has always impressed me is her students always enjoy doing whatever she assigns, regardless of how old we are. No matter what level, you're at, she’s a great professor to take and is always available outside the classroom for assistance. It was my pleasure to write this letter for Professor Sheila Boldue-Simpson. She would be a great recipient for the Senior Instructor Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. From her innovation in teaching to student engagement, to availability to assist us outside the classroom, etc., Professor Sheila Boldue-Simpson is an incredible all-around professor who I am so glad I had the opportunity to take. I would most definitely highly recommend her for this award. Ifyou have any further questions or need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
