Alcatel-Lucent 7670 Routing Switch Platform

EDGE SERVICES CARD

Optimize 3G RAN transport, prepare for the evolution to all-IP: the Edge Services Card delivers the most
reliable, flexible, scalable and cost-effective solution for 3G RAN aggregation

The Edge Services Card (ESC) enhances

the rich feature set of Alcatel-Lucents
highly reliable, scalable, and fieldproven multiprotocol Alcatel-Lucent
7670 Routing Switch Platform (RSP).
The ESC is optimized for the needs
of 3G/HSPA mobile operators who are
consolidating, enhancing and improving
their mobile data transport networks
in order to use their transport facilities
most efficiently. Also, the Edge Services
Card provides unique capability for costeffective consolidation of separate 2G
and 3G mobile transport networks.
The ESC offers superior performance
and density, unrivaled scalability and
flexibility, carrier-grade reliability and
network management, and no-risk
evolution to IP/MPLS.
The ESC comes with unprecedented
flexibility in delivering circuit emulation
(CE), ATM and inverse multiplexing
over ATM (IMA). Its network processorbased, future-proof architecture allows
the addition of new features and protocols such as multiclass/multilink
point-to-point protocol [MC/ML-PPP],
through in-service, non-service-disruptive
software upgrades, which are secure,
fully controlled and remotely managed.

With the highest port density on the

market, the ESC facilitates the growth
and evolution of the radio access network (RAN) to meet higher bandwidth
demands in 3G/HSPA mobile environments. With ATM/IMA and CE (TDM
switching) capabilities delivered on the
same ESC, service providers can easily
aggregate and connect up to thousands
of HSPA Node Bs, 3G Node Bs, 2G base
stations and cell aggregation devices
to radio network controllers (RNCs)
and base station controllers (BSCs), and
enable rapid growth scenarios for such
2G and 3G networks. With the ESC and
the Alcatel-Lucent 7670 RSP, increasing
capacity of the existing cells, performing reconfiguration or adding new cells
becomes a simple, quick and seamless
procedure.
The 7670 RSP and the ESC are fully
managed by the paradigm-setting
Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Network Manager
(NM). With its superior point-and-click,
end-to-end management and BSS/OSS
integration capabilities, the 5260 NM
provides a powerful solution for all
OAM&P aspects of a highly reliable
mobile transport network.

The ESC supports:

Eight OC-3/STM-1 ports, with
channelization down to DS1/E1 level
Two OC-12/STM-4 ports, with
channelization down to DS1/E1 level

Physical line protection, in the form of

automatic protection switching (APS)
Line card protection, in the form of
equipment protection switching (EPS)
Unique service-level protection in
the form of stateful, non-stop IMA

672 DS1s and 336 IMA groups on a

single card (SONET variant, OC-3 card)

The ESC is fully managed by the

industry-leading Alcatel-Lucent 5620
NM, which addresses key operational
requirements for mobile operators:

504 E1s and 336 IMA groups on a

single card (SDH variant, STM-1 card)

Point-and-click GUI, with end-to-end

management and provisioning

ATM, IMA and CE

The ESC delivers industry-leading scalability of more than 16,000 DS1s/12,000 E1s
per 7670 RSP system.
In conjunction with the Alcatel-Lucent
7670 RSPs hardware and control redundancy and high availability features
(non-stop signaling, routing and
forwarding), the ESC offers superior
carrier-grade protection capabilities:

Easy assignment of Node Bs to RNCs

and Node Bs re-parenting
Flexible configuration and
reconfiguration

Full redundancy
Integration to OSS/BSS systems
(CORBA/CMIP)
The ESC minimizes the technological
risks by allowing smooth evolution to
future functionality (such as MC/MLPPP) via software upgrades.
The multiprotocol features of the
Alcatel-Lucent 7670 RSP allow
simultaneous support of cell relay,
Ethernet, IP/MPLS and CE.

A typical deployment scenario for the

ESC is for high-capacity centralized

In this scenario, the Alcatel-Lucent

7670 RSP is located in the MTSO, where
it aggregates Iub traffic from a large
number of Node Bs and provides connectivity to the RNCs. The excellent
traffic management and quality of
service (QoS) capabilities of the 7670 RSP
allow managed growth of bandwidthintensive 3G and HSPA traffic.
In scenarios where the centralized
aggregation of mobile traffic needs to
encompass more than six to eight STM1s/OC-3s, the deployment of the 7670
RSP and the ESC provides tangible
and measurable benefits over similar
solutions with lower port densities and
capacities. The 7670 RSP provides the
highest port density and highest capacity in the industry for the mobile backhaul and aggregation. Augmenting the
7670 RSPs high-capacity aggregation
role with further optimization of bandwidth utilization of interfaces towards

RNCs (Iub and Iur) can result in combined

savings of up to 25 percent on transport costs and RNC interfaces over
non-optimized scenarios.1
Figure 1 shows one such example
of centralized, high-capacity mobile
aggregation. The 7670 RSP and its ESCs
are used to terminate virtual paths
from a large number of Node Bs and
deliver the traffic to adjacent RNCs
via a smaller number of bandwidthoptimized interfaces. In addition, the
7670 RSP is used to optimize connectivity towards the PSTN, SGSN and
towards the mobile core network.

With the ability to perform TDM

switching (CE) on the ESC, the role of
the 7670 RSP in the MTSO can extend
to providing connectivity not only to
RNCs, but also to legacy 2G BSCs and
mobile switching centers (MSCs). By
doing so, a mobile operator can reduce
the number of networking elements in
the MTSO and increase overall
reliability and availability. (Figure 3)

Fixed and Mobile Applications

The ESC can also be deployed as a high
density card for other ATM, IMA and
CE applications for fixed and mobile
operators.

Combined 3G Aggregation
and 2G Switching at the MTSO
The ESC is also instrumental in
enabling cost-effective converged
transport infrastructure for 3G and
2G mobile traffic. (Figure 2)
