Dear Parents and Guardians
My name is Charles Matthew Rooks and I am extremely excited to have your
children in my 8th grade science class. I hope that your children are equally excited
to begin the school year. Please allow me to give you a brief introduction of myself,
my expectations, and what you should expect from me. I grew up in the rural areas
of North Carolina so I love nature. I joined the military rather young and served in
Iraq during my first few years of service. I currently still serve in the Army Reserves.
I graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelors of science. It was during
this time that I realized my love of science. I later attended the Alternate
Certification for Teachers (ACT) course in order to get certified as a teacher. I
believe that science is the study of our world and how it works. If children
understand this idea then I believe they will be better prepared for life.
My expectations of students are demanding but fair. I expect students to be
on time, seated in their assigned seat, and prepared for class. Preparation includes
the completion of any homework assignments due that day, textbooks in hand
ready for use, and to have pencil and paper. I require that every student displays
respect for their classmates, school property, and instructor. I would love for
students to feel free to participate in all learning activities. Curiosity and creativity
are both welcome and appreciated during instruction and activities. Consequences
will be enforced to maintain fairness to all students.
Absences are dealt with on a case by case basis. All assignments will be
communicated in class and through email. I expect students to perform 100% of
the work assigned. If a student fails to turn in an assignment on the due date a
drop of 15 points will occur per additional late day. Tardiness for class will result in a
slip to be signed by a parent or guardian. The second incident parents or guardians
will be contacted by phone to discuss further actions. If behavioral problems occur
a warning will be issued for the first offense. The second offense parents or
guardians will be contacted. Violence and any severe infractions will be dealt with
by administration. Parents can assist by standing by these rules.
Parents can assist in providing an optimal opportunity for children to learn.
Provide a quiet study area free of distractions. If a student requires additional help I
will gladly assist in any way possible, but please allow the children to do their work.
Please provide a valid phone number and email address to allow me to
communicate freely with you. I will provide all assignments, lessons, and activities
through the email you provide to ensure that you as a parent or guardian are kept in
the loop. Conferences will be done by appointment only unless during open house
at the beginning of the school year. I would like to meet with all my students
parents so please come and talk with me. I have provided my contact information
at the top of this letter. Feel free to contact me regarding your children during the
week after school hours via email.
