This outstanding figure was Grikor Mirzoeff Suni. He came to join the many thousands of Armenians who have found security and happiness in this great land of ours. To the Armenians who had left their homeland, he revived tender memories of old with the lullabies, the songs they sang as they tilled their soil, the mystic religious chants, the sad love melodies, gay dance tunes and other songs which depicted their former life. To those of us who were nurtured on American soil, Grikor Mirzoeff Suni, with his vivid interpretations and superb renditions of these beautiful folk-songs and compositions, gave a colorful picture of the courage and heroism of the Armenians through hundreds of years of persecution, of their fine traditions and interesting customs. ‘He became the idol of the music-loving public. Grikor Mirzoeff Sani was an actist of the fist rank, with a career extending over a period of forty-five years, He completed the course of Theoretic Composition under the direction of the famous Rimsky Korsakofl at the Imperial Conservatory of Music in St. Petersburg during the year 1903, His carly efforts were rewarded by a prize from the Theatre Art of St. Petersburg for the best musical drama of Bab by Isabella Grinevski, a work which was produced by the Theatre in 1902. In 1904 Grikor Mirzceff Suni was sent by The Russian Imperial Ethnographic Society to travel in various parts of Russia and The Caucasus to make a study of the musical ethnographies of various nationalities. He devoted eleven years to this study. During the war, he was conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Tiflis. After the war he traveled in Turkey, Persia, India, Egypt and Constantinople. He studied the music of these countries, collected numerous folk-songs and religious music, and literature pertaining to them. ‘As a result of careful research work, he discovered the true Armenian music. He has been able to give the Armenian music a distinctive harmonization that is purely Armenian in character. He was the founder of the first Armenian opera and wrote three operas: Areknazan, Asli-Keram (ftom Armenian and Persian life) and Renaissance. He composed a C Minor Symphony and numerous romances. He wrote The History of Armenian Music and The Theory of Persian Music, He organized and gave concerts in Russia, The Caucasus, Armenia, Turkey, Persia, India, and the United States. From the standpoint of Folk-music created by the people as distinct from individually created. music, there are in Grikor Mirzoeff Suni’s collection of hundseds of folk-songs, many which place ‘Armenian musical culture on as high a level as those of the most cultured nations of the world. In Symphony Hall, Boston, Mass., during 1925 and 1935, ‘The Armenian Chorus was twice successful in winning first prize for the best rendered examples of folk-music—harmonizations by Grikor Mirzocff Suni. In 1935 there was founded, under the sponsorship of Grikor Mirzoeff Suni, The Armenian Musical Society of America. Choruses were organized in the major eastern and middle-westem cities of The United States. These choruses took the name of Suni Chorus as a tribute to this great artist. During the same year, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of his musical career, the ‘Armenian people of the United States showed their respect and admiration by organizing Jubilee Concerts in various parts of this country, in which the Suni Choruses participated, ‘The government of Armenia likewise honored Suni with a jubilee Concert, broadcast his works by radio, and published a song book of ten of his compositions, He carried on his creative work and other activities until almost the very moment that death claimed him on December 18, 1959. Thad the rare privilege of knowing Grikor Mirzoeff Suni as a man, artist, teacher and friend, ‘A man of high principle and forceful character, he was at all times congenial and kind. His association was inspiring, Men and women alike, young and old loved him. He was a resourceful thinker, cultured and conversant with the atts, sciences and all phases of life. He loved nature and was as much at home in the garden as he was on the podium, He was endowed with an unlimited capacity for work, a rare power of concentration, and tireless energy and enthusiasm, Asa friend, he was the embodiment of sincerity, devotion and loyalty. ‘The charming memories of my association with him will always remain dear to me. The passing of such a genius was a great loss to the musical world. His memory will be cherished by all and his glorious spitit will live forever in his immortal works!
