They go to the very top, sit down in the shallow water with feet straight out in front of them and a hand on either side for guidance, and immediately begin to slide down the sixty feet of height, gaining, before they have gone hall way, so great a speed that the final descent is liko a fall of a stone. They follow each other in a constant stream, those behind coming on top of those who have already reached the pool. now the men, and lastly the woman, are drawn to join the sliders and the fun increases. The women begin tinicly, only half way up the slide, but soon grow bolder, and mixed parties of four, six and eight in rows ot two, three or four each, start together, and with a good deal of laughter and unsuccessful attempts to help each, other, dash widely into the pool. The poo! is usually full o a struggling, screaming crowd of young people. |i you understand the game, the slide is a graceful process; but it you don't, if you fail to sit, erect, it you do not keep your feet together, above all i you lose your balance and donot remain absolutely straight on the slider, then your descent will be far from graceful, it may even be slightly painful and, the final plunge into the oo! will be very undignified. On a slide picnic those who do not tire themselves with sliding become absolutely ‘exhausted with laughing at the sliders. The fascination of the thing is extra ordinary and seoms beyond the understanding of the any same person who has no experience of this game. Con. 18-PK-435-07. 3 ‘One of the most remarkable objects discovered in the ruins of the Mohenjodaro civilisation was a small, yot beautifully crafted, terracotta head of a man — an enducing image of not only India’s antiquity but also a mute testimony to the high excellence reached in the field of traditional arts and craft. Just as every successive invasion contributed something new to India's cultural tradition without destroying its intrinsic quality, Indian craft too bor- rowed traditions from other cultures, othor civilisations to emerge more vibrant than before. Craft in India was never an activity separated from dally routine. Indeed through centuries of its continuous civilisation, the creativity of India’s craftsmen and woven itself into the fabric of every day life. Largely functional, these objects were created not far the affluent alone or meant to be enjoyed at a distance in museums or show cases. Yet in these every day objects the craftsmen managed to infuse a highly developed sense of aesthetics that remained spectacularly simple. Craft in India survived and flourished in an atmosphere often dictated by community needs and local resources and environment. Although governed by strict norms of tradition, these crafts continued to reinvent themselves and display a creativity that ensured its evolution into a more refined form. Indeed the distinction between artist and craftsman, designer and producer was non-existent. The craftsman himself designed his piece, often evolving it in his mind as he worked and then laboured on it to bring it to its aesthetic completion. His creations were never signed but this lack of identity did not prevent him from approaching his work with total involvement and religious favour. In total harmony with his environment, he produced to meet the specific needs of the community he lived in and his community gave him the status and the wherewithal for existence. Much of this changed with the advent of colonialism and industtialisation. The craftsman and most craft went into a qualitative and quantitative decline. It was with the revival of nationalism that attention was once again turned to the craft heritage of India. Along with Khadi, handicraft too became the symbol for India's awakening nationalism.
