Law Enforcement Experts Agree:

New York Should

Raise the Age

The proposed reforms built upon science and proven outcomes, coupled with
the use of evidenced based strategies will reduce crime, future victimization,
and improve outcomes for our youth.
Albany Police Chief Steven Krokoff

I think its a very,

very good idea
Onondaga County District Attorney
William Fitzpatrick

The public safety benefits to raising the age

are overwhelming. Under the current system,
youth housed in adult facilities are more
likely to encounter criminal influences that
will lead them to a permanent life of crime.
Madison County Sheriff Allen Riley &
Jefferson County Sheriff Colleen M. ONeill

Someone commits a serious crime, there are

still going be repercussions for it and theyre
still going to go away to a secure juvenile
detention facility. But the services in those
facilities are geared towards children and the
development of their minds.
Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco

These reforms will enhance

public safety and build stronger
communities. I urge the Legislature
to take action on these proposals
the time for reform is now.
Westchester District Attorney
Janet DiFiore

Under the proposed legislation, the most serious offenders will continue to be
prosecuted in the adult criminal courts . . . [in] special Youth Parts . . . that would
offer appropriate sentences and services for young people, including incarceration
Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple; Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol;
Saratoga County Sheriff Michael H. Zurlo; Jefferson County Sheriff Colleen ONeill;
Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts; Madison County Sheriff Allen Riley;
Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting; Putnam County Undersheriff Peter Convery
