MES Definition of Independent Learning

Independent learning is a process during which learners
develop the values, attitudes, knowledge and skills
needed to make responsible decisions and take
appropriate actions in regard to their own learning, in
conjunction with relevant others. It involves teachers
thinking clearly about learning outcomes and learning
stages and pupils valuing learning for its own sake.
Independent learners are active and curious. Through a
structured developmental continuum they create their
own hypotheses, ask their own questions, coach one
another, set goals for themselves, monitor their
progress and experiment with ideas for taking risks,
knowing that mistakes and being stuck are part of
learning.
The skills needed to be a good independent learner are:
1. Thinking Skills
2. Social Skills
3. Communication Skills
4. Self-management Skills
5. Research Skills
