Overview: ‘The Novak Institute for Hazing Prevention is an intentionally focused inter disciplinary learning experience for people concerned about preventing hazing. The curriculum has been designed to facilitate individual learning for the purpose of community oF organization change. Consistent with the HPO mission and vision, the institute is designed to emphasize prevention strategies that are intended to decrease risk and harm associated with hazing. The Novak Institute utilizes @ ‘multicsciplinary approach to engage participants in identifying the complenty ofthe hazing phenomenon, Please take some time prior to departure for the institute to consider the following questions before attending. ‘+ What insight and expertise de you bring to the table? \What is your len hazing provention on your campus or within organization? In the community? In society? ‘What two or three broad questions do you have about hazing prevention? \Who else in your community or organization i invested in hazing prevention? What steps will ou take after the institute to act on what you learned? OR What steps are you expected to tke? As an lnstitute, this program is different from conferences you might have attended where each session is independent in ature, Ata conference, missing one session to toke a cll or have lunch with your jelend in town won't necessarily impact your absorption of the material. At an Institute, each piece ofthe curriculum builds upon the ones before. Missing one piece will drostically impact your ability to fully grasp the entire concept of prevention. As such, being present forthe entire progrom is critical to assure participants get the full benefit. ‘Team Meeting Agenda: you are attending with a coll for the institute. ‘+ Ask team members to introduce themselves and share why they ae exited about the institute Each person may be ina dtferent place. Thisisto be accepted and expected. Make it clear that each team ‘member brings aciferent experience and has something to learn. ‘+ Share results ofthe individual reflection questions “+ Consider the atference between a conference and an institute: ‘+ Review the overviow ofthe institute provided above 'Y _Wwhat will be the hardest pat for you about working within the prevention philosophy? + Discus the folowing question to facitate better communication among team members ¥ Open and honest discussions are 2 critical during the institute. How wil the team handle conversations ‘about knawn hating sus on campus or within the organization? What level of honesty le safe? What additional expectations does the team have of one another in terms of involvement, learning, flow throush, etc? + Review logistics, including travel, ving arrangements, schedule, ete. 4+ Discuss and establish plan for flow-through after the Institute, gue ora full delegation, schedule a meeting to set expectations and prepare the team. Stack the Dec ‘There are a few things you can do before leaving campus to get more out of the experience. When we asked past participants, they suggested taking the following steps to prepare for follow-through in advance. Use these ideas as @ guide to create your own pian for implementation following the Institute ‘© Meet with your supervisor or sponsoring organization before the institute to discuss the expected results and anticipated action items. Be clear about what outcomes are required, ideal, and off the table. + Before departing, schedule a follow up meeting with constituents and team members to discuss outcomes of the institute. ‘+ Make a commitment to an individual or organization in your community to present a report of lessons learned and next steps + Ask supervisors; colleagues, and students what permission and support is available for action steps that result from the institute. Secure their commitment before the institute, and schedule a meeting to follow vp. ‘© Ifyou are attending with a delegation, articulate what is expected of each person after the institute, and Identify who will be responsible for managing follow through.
