CMe Sees) OSA Student Chapter Activity & Youth Education Grants Overview By Gale Mamatova Program Overview (OSA provides grant funding for OSA Student Chapters and Local Sections in two categories: © Youth Education © Activity/Professional Development & Special Events Youth Education Grants fund programs that enable Chapters and Sections to promote science learning, by working directly with grade school students. Activity Grants support professional development efforts that help students build technical skills and their network of colleagues around the world. Name: OSA Chapter 1 Location: Brazil ‘Amount Requested: $200 ‘Activity Description: Chapter party ion 2 Applic Name: OSA Chapter 2 Location: USA ‘Amount Requested: $200 Activity Description: Each year, the student committee in Engineering Physics organizes a week dedicated to physics, and each year the OSA student chapter is invited to animate a few activities, We will present the Extreme Microwave conference, which shows different physics phenomena which can happen in a microwave. We also organize a social activity forall the students in Engineering Physics. Such activities promote interactions between students of different years, including graduates and undergraduates, and give the OSA chapter visibility and recruitment opportunities. This year, we plan on renewing the laser alignment game where the ‘students must send a laser on targets in a room using small mirrors. The requested funds are to allow us to buy the necessary material for this activity (mirrors, beam splitters, etc, and to provide refreshments for the participants. Application 3 Name: OSA Chapter 3 Location: Germany ‘Amount Requested: $100 Activity Description: After a lengthy campus recruitment session coincident with the new academic year, the group hopes to organize an informal social networking function ata local bar, hosting both OSA members and invited faculty. Pizza and beverages will be provided, and attendees will ave the opportunity to participate ina few organized activities such as optical trivia, We hope to foster an environment for students and faculty alike to discuss science and engineering informally. The event will double as an information gathering session to gauge the Page 3 of 14 interests and suggestions of members. This information will be used to outline a plan which will serve as a guide for the OSA chapter throughout the year. Application 1 Name: OSA Chapter 1 Location: USA Amount Requested: $750 Activity Description: We are planning to organize a tour with the chapter members and visit a lab. Application 2 Name: OSA Chapter 2 Location: Russia ‘Amount Requested: $250 ‘Activity Description: We had the idea to organize a meetings focused on different topics that of Interest to students. These topics concern several people of in our chapter, from young, researchers and students who are working in this research field to young students. The symposium will be based on a topical lecture given by some high profile invited speaker and ther shart talks by local speakers including the active contribution of students. The workshop will start with a broad introduction to the concepts .The expected audience is composed by bachelor, master and PhO students, young and senior researchers. ‘Application 3 Name: OSA Chapter 3 Location: Italy ‘Amount Requested: $500 ‘Activity Description: This activity is conference and school for students from all over the world. Its main goal isto organize the series of lectures for students, which will be given by the invited scientists, who will represent the world famous laboratories. The key scientific areas, which will be covered in the talks, are Physics of Semiconductors, Optoelectronics, Photovoltaics, Engineering and Physics of Nanostructures. The series of unique educational courses on ‘modeling of semiconductor lasers, nanostructures and their growth techniques is also planned. During the planned Student poster sessions there will be splendid opportunity for valuable Page 5 of 14 scientific discussions and communication between the student authors and the scientists from all over the world. Travel grants for students from abroad and remote districts are also available. Application 4 Name: OSA Chapter 4 Location: USA ‘Amount Requested: $750 Activity Description: We are proposing to take a short road trip to optics companies in the San Jose area. We have contacts at Lighthouse Photonics (Santa Clara), Spectra-Physics (Santa Clara), ESI (Sunnyvale), Raydiance (Petaluma), and intend to contact Coherent and SPI Lasers as well. ‘The trip would serve as a fantastic networking opportunity for our students and foster professional growth in the photonics industry. Classroom, so all of our chapter members will take turns serving as a teacher at primary and teaching electives at the middle school during the whole semester. itis a migrant elementary school, whose condition is inadequate for pupils, so we will bring them several interesting, simple physics experiments every Thursday, and try our best to broaden their horizons. We are also going to donate some stationery and books to children. In addition, we'll keep on being the teacher for high grade elective "Myth Busters” at the middle school, exposing some rumors of life with the scientific knowledge we have learned, for example, using microwave ovens frequently will not give rise to cancer. We hope that they can learn to observe and ponder with the scientific mind in routine. Application 2 Name: OSA Chapter 2 Location: Africa ‘Amount Requested: $1,000 Activity Description: Will attend an exhibition that focuses on displays, workshops, tours, talks and hands-on activities aimed at enthusing learners, students and the general public about the endless possibilities of science and technology. ‘Application 3 Name: OSA Chapter 3 Location: Africa ‘Amount Requested: $1,000 ‘Activity Description: Some of our members take part in outreach events, but we would like to organize our outreach efforts so that they form @ more cohesive part of our chapter programming. With this grant, we'd pay for transportation and lunch for those OSA members Participating in our outreach events. We think this will be a good way to have fun, participate in the local community, and build community in our group. We hope to use the Optics Suitcase Page 7 of 14 (see other grant) along with some of our members’ research materials for fun optical demonstrations. We would like to do this with the museums and local schools our area. Application 4 Name: OSA Chapter 4 Location: USA ‘Amount Requested: $500 Activity Description: We would like to participate in an optics demo competition to create low: cost, creative, educational, and entertaining demos. In Students can team up to submit a 1-page idea. After the first submission, they will pick a certain number to give short presentations about their idea and a proposed budget. Then they will pick 5 teams to compete in a final event that involves building a demo and presenting it to an audience. The final winners will be awarded with prizes and certificates. Application 5 Name: OSA Chapter S Location: Argentina ‘Amount Requested: $500 Activity Description: Develop not for seeing objects and experiences to explain science concepts to the blind community, using other senses like hearing, touch, smell and taste. Those will be simple objects we design and proof with the students of a blind institute where we can go to be sure they work, we will work with two plastic artist who already worked with the blind community (they don’t want to be pay, we should just support their transport in case they visit, the blind Institute with us). Application 1 Name: OSA Chapter 1 Location: USA, ‘Amount Requested: $500 Activity Description: To celebrate the coming 100 anniversary of OSA, we plan to host a competition of knowledge about the history and achievements of OSA. In this way, we can offer a platform for our members to know more about OSA. Also, non-members are welcome, since we can take this opportunity to promote OSA’s concept and influence. We plan to set round robin contest, then knock-out contest, finally the finals. Application 2 Name: OSA Chapter 2 Location: China ‘Amount Requested: $500 Activity Description: Our University hosts an annual symposium dedicated to celebrating and understanding novel work in optics and photonics. In addition to giving graduate students the ‘opportunity to review relevant and exciting research, this symposium provides students the stage to showcase their work via posters to interested fellow investigators. Using this annual ‘symposium as the venue, we propose to create a poster competition with prizes given to the top three posters. Furthermore, while the poster contest provides a good setting for academic competition, we also will strive to create an atmosphere ripe for networking, To this end, we will provide light refreshments and snacks to facilitate networking between all attending. Application 3 Name: OSA Chapter 3 Location: USA ‘Amount Requested: $500 Activity Description: As new members of OSA chapter, we have great enthusiasm to acknowledge our young researchers for their devoted efforts in optics and photonics. Our chapter plans to host an academic presentation competition, rendering young researchers @ great chance to report their recent accomplishments to more people. The theme of this competition is focused on nanostructures for efficient light manipulation. The participants who Page 9 of 14 have at least one year research experience in related fields should write a brief abstract (100 words). Except for the abstract for preliminary filtering, 10 remaining participants should submit their sides for the evaluation by invited judges, which will account for 40% of the total score. 30, ‘minutes presentation accounting for another 60% will be performed by participants on the competition day. The event will be focused on the presentation of the past and future activities of the chapter. In addition, a series of short seminars about the scientific researchers developed will be shown by new and old officers. After the dissertations, the participants will be invited to socialize during a coffee break. We expect to give visibility to ‘the OSA Student Chapter and to involve new members in the activities. Moreover, we expect to have an audience of about 30 people. ‘Application 4 Name: OSA Chapter 4 Location: Italy Page 11 of 14 Amount Requested: $150 Activity Description: Recruitment program reserved for photonics member to keep the sustainability of this chapter management. One of the target isto increase the number of new ‘members of student chapter members, We need recruitment to attract the interest of the students in optics a photonics field in order to keep the sustainability of this chapter. We need @ grant for promoting and campaigning activities to promote the chapters to other students in our institutions, About 10 until 20 newer members are hoped to strengthen the activities in the ‘coming year. This program is planning to startin the early of the month September 2014, Attractive promoting and campaigning programs will utilized posters, opening a special booth in the locations where student’ activities centered, and other media such as social media, and ‘mailing list. A simple welcome party will be also being held to inaugurate these new members. Students are requested to prepare 20-minute talks aimed at students of a similar level of understanding from different fields in optics and photonics, Students will be accommodated in self-contained huts. Conference presentations will be held in the mornings, with networking events (such as beach excursions and a barbecue dinner) to be held in the afternoons and evenings.
