Topic/Experiment: Preparing Standard Solution

Aim: To prepare a standard solution of sodium hydroxide which has

concentration of 1.0 mol dm-3 and then make a NaOH solution with
0.1 mol dm-3 by using dilution method.
Apparatus:

Weighing bottle, volumetric flask 100cm3, electronic

balance, filter funnel, dropper, pippete 10mL

Chemicals:

Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), distilled water.

Procedures:
(A)Preparing standard solutions.
1. Determine the amount of NaOH used to prepare the standard solution.
2. Weight the NaOH needed by using weighting bottle and electronic
balance.
3. The solid is carefully tipped into a beaker containing distilled water.
4. After dissolving the solid, transfer it into a 100cm3 volumetric flask.
5. By using dropper, the flask is then filled to the mark with distilled
water.
6. The flask is then shaken to mix the solution thoroughly.

(B)Preparing a solution by dilution.

1. Using the formula M1V1 = M2V2, calculate the amount of 1.0 mol dm-3
NaOH needed to prepare the dilute NaOH solution.
2. Pippete the 1.0 mol dm-3 NaOH into a volumetric flask.
3. By using dropper, the flask is then filled to the mark with distilled
water.
4. The flask is then shaken to mix the solution thoroughly.
