3115 Neuro-Fuzzy Computing in Automation

Spring 2011
Exercise 2
1) A department store is developing its marketing strategy using the collected customer
data. The company wants to distinguish the customers that most probably respond to
personalized advertising among the obvious shopping lovers and hopeless penny-pinchers.
The age of the customers and the total purchases during the last campaign are known.
Based on your own intuitions, create a fuzzy classifier that points out the customers that will
probably require personalized niche marketing campaigns. Formulate the linguistic variables
and the required rules to cluster the customers into, e.g., three separate marketing groups.
Implement the fuzzy inference system using the graphical FIS editor of Matlab Fuzzy Logic
Toolbox.

2) Consider the following linear system,

G( s)

First, build a SIMULINK-model where the system is controlled with a PD-controller. Second,
develop the fuzzy counterpart of the PD-controller and compare their performance. Use a
unit step as an excitation signal. Use a sample time Ts = 0.1s.
