WELCOME
This booklet is a guide to further education opportunities after high school. It includes
general application information for different universities, FET (Further Education and
Training) colleges and other institutions within Gauteng in South Africa.
For each university, there is a section on every department, faculty or college, and for each
FET college, there a section on every NV(C) (National Certificate Vocational) course offered.
Within each section, all relevant information has been included: ranging from website
addresses and contact details, to admission requirements and application deadlines.
All of the information in this booklet has been taken directly from each institutions website,
as well as from direct contact with the institutions where necessary. Please note that, while
every effort has been taken to ensure the information in this booklet is accurate and
correct, there could be some errors or discrepancies. Please visit each institutions website
(listed on each of the pages) for the most current and accurate information.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Admission Point Score (APS) system has been developed for the National Senior
Certificate and the Independent Examinations Board based on the achievement rating of
each subject. Your total APS is the sum of the achievement ratings of your seven Grade 12
subjects, which determines if you are eligible for a particular course at a university.
How to calculate your Admission Point Score:
1. Write down the seven subjects you are taking for Grade 12, including Life Orientation, as
well as your result for each subject.
2. Allocate an Admission Point Score to each of your subjects according to the table shown
below.
3. Add up the number of points from all of your subjects.
4. Compare your calculated APS with the minimum APS requirement for admission into a
particular department or course at a university.
5. Note that some universities do not count Life Orientation in the total points, and other
universities only count half of the points from Life Orientation. Check with each university to
see how to treat Life Orientation.

The University of Pretoria has a useful tool on their website, where you can calculate your
APS by entering your Grade 10, Grade 11 or Grade 12 subjects and results online. The
website address is: http://web.up.ac.za/default.asp?ipkCategoryID=13603.

GENERAL INFORMATION
FET colleges offer vocational and occupational training for specific job or employment
possibilities within South Africa.
There are several different qualifications offered at FET colleges. The general characteristics
are outlined below:
NC(V): National Certificate (Vocational)
The NC(V) is a qualification that consists of three levels (Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4) of the
NQF (National Qualifications Framework). This qualification is designed to provide both the
theory and practical aspects of the specific programmes. The practical component of study
may be offered in a real workplace environment or in a simulated workplace environment. It
will provide students with an opportunity to experience work situations during the period of
study.
A certificate is issued on the successful completion of each of the three levels of study: i.e.
Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. Each level of the NC(V) course takes one year to complete.
In general, for entry into the National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF Level 2, you require:
A year end school report for Grade 9 or higher; or
A NQF Level 1 qualification
In order to obtain a NC(V), a student is required to take a total of 7 subjects. These include 3
fundamental subjects and 4 vocational subjects, which vary depending on the course. The 3
fundamental subjects are English (which is the language of teaching and learning),
Mathematics and Life Orientation.
Nated: National N4 N6 Qualification
These courses are aimed at learners that have completed Grade 12, and would like to enter
the job market fairly quickly. There are three levels: N4, N5 and N6, and each level takes 6
months to complete (making it 18 months for Levels 4 to 6).
These courses lead to a National N Diploma: after completing N6 theory in the classroom,
learners need to acquire 18 months of relevant, practical work experience, after which they
can apply for the National Diploma.
Please note: All of the courses listed in this section of the booklet (FET colleges) are NC(V)
Level 2, unless stated otherwise.
