Title of Lesson: Division

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills/Standards:
Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to connect
repeated addition and subtraction to multiplication and division situations that involve equal
groupings and shares.

Objective/Purpose: Model, create, and describe contextual division situations in which a set
of concrete objects is separated into equivalent sets.

Introduce Lesson: The students know that repeatedly adding the same number to
itself a number of times is multiplying. In order for them to divide, I want them to start by
using the same process as multiplying in order to say how many times must a number be
added to itself to equal the larger number given.
Example: Draw 3 squares on the board, and have the students draw 3 squares
on a blank sheet of paper so they can follow along. Then, draw a larger square
on the board that consists of 9 squares so as the students can clearly see that it
takes 3 rows of the 3 squares to make the square of 9. Therefore, 9 divided by 3
is 3.
Lesson: http://www.worksheetplace.com/mf/beginnerdivision1.pdf is the link to the
worksheet. I would like you to stress the concept that division is just like multiplication
where we are given the first number, and the answer, and that we are looking for the
middle number that multiplies into the first number. Also, let them know it is helpful to
draw out the problem in order to solve it. That is where the square example on the board
will come in.
Re-Teach: If a student did not understand the lesson by taking the multiplication
knowledge and using the method of finding out how many times they would have
to add the divisor to get the dividend, then I would re-teach this as a subtraction
method. Take the dividend (or end number) and subtract by groups of the divisor
(beginning number) and however many groups must be subtracted in order to get
0 is the answer (quotient). I would also use more visual aids and visual
worksheets to help the student understand the concept better.
