Walter Payton was a starting Running-Back for the Chicago Bears and he
was wearing the number thirty four.

Childhood to College
Walter Payton was born on July 25, 1954 in Columbia, Mississippi. He was
admired for his attitude on and off the field.
People who knew him pretty well called him by his nickname sweetness.
He was first noticed when he joined Jackson State University and made
the starting line his first year, 1971.

All-American
Walter made the All-American Team and was name the best black college
player of the year in 1973 and 1974.
In his four years with Jackson State he scored 450 points with 3,500
rushing yards.

NFL

He became a professional football player in 1975.


He made the Pro Bowl nine times.
He won NFL MVP award twice.
He held the NFL rushing record 16,726, and the single game rushing
record of 275 yards in one game.
