Ex. 10 Half Time Beat Pattern (Triplet feel)
Welll start with the R hand playing quarter note triplets on the floor tom while playing straight quarter notes on the hi-hat
with the L hand, Together these rhythms form a 3:2 poly rhythm that begins on counts | and 3. On the Sth measure
welll establish the half-time pulse by maneuvering the R hand from the floor tom to the snare drum on count 3
of every measure. The "double drop" patter is created by adding 2 sixteenth note triplet bass drums between
each of the R hand (floor tom/snare drum) strokes. Once this pattern has been developed, vary its length
from 4 bars, to 2 bars, to 1 bar, while alternating it with a straight eighth note triplet double bass pattern.

Ex. 11 Common Time Beat Pattern (Triplet feel)
‘Again well apply the 3:2 poly rhythm between the R and L hand. We'll play quarter notes on the hi-hat with the L hand
as we shift the floor tom pattern so that the polyrhythmic phrase begins on counts 2 and 4. On the Sth measure we'll
establish the common-time pulse by maneuvering the R hand from the floor tom to the snare drum on counts 2 and
4 of every measure. The "double drop" pattern is created by adding 2 sixteenth note triplet bass drums between
each of the R hand (floor tom/snare drum) strokes. Once this pattern has been developed, vary its length
Prato from 4 bars, to 2 bars, to 1 bar, while alternating it with a straight eighth note triplet double bass pattern.
