Rwanda has made progress in reducing poverty and hunger since 1994, but it remains one of the poorest countries in Africa. Nearly 60% of Rwandans live below the poverty line and almost 40% live in extreme poverty on less than $0.90 per day. While Rwanda supports eradicating global hunger, it must prioritize reducing hunger and poverty within its own borders first. The government's Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy aims to decrease poverty levels by 2020. Rwanda also joined the East African Community to boost economic growth and living standards.

Issue: What can we do (as a united faction) do to eradicate global hunger? Country Assigned: Rwanda 1. What is the current issue in your country? The 2013 Global Hunger Index (GHI), shows us that global hunger has been improved since 1990, falling by one-third. Despite the progress made the level of hunger in the world remains serious, with 870 million people going hungry, according to estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Rwanda has made remarkable progress since the tragedy of the 1994 genocide, enjoying strong economic growth rates, creating new business opportunities, and lifting people out of poverty. The country has seen an average annual growth in incomes of nearly six percent over the past five years. But Rwanda a landlocked country with the highest population density in Sub-Saharan Africaremains one of the worlds poorest countries. Nearly 60 percent of the population lives below the poverty line, with almost 40 percent living in extreme poverty on less than $0.90 per day. 2. What is your countries stand on this issue? The government of Rwanda takes poverty and global hunger very seriously because they are one of the poorest countries in the world. With regards to helping the rest of the world global hunger they arent doing much because they have their own poverty and hunger to sort out. To help themselves they have initiated an Economic Development and poverty reduction plan (EDPRS) in the hope that by 2020 their poverty will have decreased. Rwanda has started to welcome foreign investors in hopes of increasing its economy and reducing the poverty and hunger. Rwanda have also recently entered into the east African Community in hopes in improving its international standard of living. 3. Explain the reasons for this stand? A new study has revealed that the effects of hunger and poverty in Rwanda cost the country $820 million a year. 11.5% of its annual GDP. Rwanda has to sort its own poverty and hunger issues out first before it can start helping other countries. They have made great progress since the genocide in 1994 and hope to continue to reduce the percentage of its people that are living under the poverty line and reduce hunger as a whole in Rwanda.
