Human Rights in the Americas

This class will examine the legal struggles over human rights
controversies and cases in the Americas, from Canada to
Argentina, 1945 to the present. Students will read scholarly and
journalistic texts, and publications from UN, the Inter-American
Court on Human Rights among others. You will learn:
Freedom

of expression, refugees &


migration
Transitional justice, rights of minorities, the
environment
Indigenous groups, torture, enforced
disappearances
Extrajudicial executions & the death
penalty, prisons, and prisoners, genocide in
Guatemala
Corporate social responsibility, the war on
drugs
