Evening Report | 24 March 2015

Latest news
Australian shares posted modest gains on Tuesday with
the ASX 200 Index rising by 0.2 per cent and making up for
yesterdays weakness. Should the local market edge higher
by just 0.5 per cent on Wednesday, the ASX 200 will be
trading at the best levels in seven years.
TPG Telecom (TPM) shares rose by 3.5 per cent today
after beating half-year profit expectations. The NSW based
internet company posted an 18 per cent rise in profit to
$106.7m. Its interim dividend was raised by 22 per cent to
5.5c/share and is payable on 19 May. TPM has lifted its
earnings guidance (profit forecast) for the year by around
$20 million or 5 per cent.
TPM made a $1.4bn takeover bid recently for the smaller
WA based internet company, iiNet (IIN). IINs management
have backed the bid although a number of shareholders
have shown some opposition, including its former chief
executive and founder. TPM shares have surged by 33 per
cent so far this calendar year, are in their fourth straight
year of gains and are at record highs.
Kathmandu (KMD) losses accelerated this afternoon with
the adventure retailers shares slumping by 12.4 per cent.
KMD posted a NZ$1.8m loss for the six months to 31
January and has flagged the likelihood of weaker earnings
over the second half of 2015.
Mining and energy stocks were the best improvers
following a rise in gold, oil and base metal prices overnight.
A falling greenback has been helpful in boosting most
commodity prices. BHP Billiton (BHP), the worlds largest
miner rose by 0.7 per cent today while Fortescue Metals
(FMG) surged by 1.5 per cent but is still down 19 per cent
this month.
Volume was average with 1.8bn shares traded worth
$4.4bn. 497 stocks rose, 421 fell and 386 finished flat.
The Australian dollar buys US$0.785, 0.719, 0.526 and
94.
Tonight, Flash (mid-month) manufacturing updates will
be issued in Europe and the US. European inflation will be
out at 8.30pm AEDT while US home prices and consumer
confidence data will be released later in the evening.
