Background
Fiji was under British rule for
almost a century before they
finally gained independence
in October of 1970. Fiji was
declared a republic in 1987,
but after a couple of years of
going back and forth, Fiji
held a general election in
1994, were a Prime Minister
was appointed.
For administration purposes, Fiji
is currently divided into four
districts

The current president of Fiji is
Epeli Nailatikau, who was elected
in 2009 when the previous
president retired. The president
is the head of state while the
Prime Minister is the head of
government. The president is
elected by parliament.

Frank Bainimarama, pictured right, is
the current prime minister of Fiji. He is
responsible for the i-Taukei Affairs and
the Sugar Industry.
