Introduction
The present course on Functional Structures deals with English Grammar from a
perspective different from the traditional, descriptive one. Using as a starting point the
existing connections established between the typical grammar structures and their
functions, this course focuses less on the abstract character of the particular structures and
rather on their usc, on their functionality in both spoken and written language
Each chapter focuses on onc of the major functions of the language: concepts,
messages, rendering of personal speech, etc. This particular dealing with the typical
structures of spoken English will help the future teachers of English to organize and
structure the teaching process on functional rather than descriptive bases.
