Writing a Play Review

Watching a play is a fleeting experience thats why writing a play review may be
exciting yet difficult. As a spectator, you have to enjoy watching the performance and
critically analyze the work of art at the same time. In the course of engaging yourself
into this challenging task, just Keep calm and be sane!
To be sane, you have to put together the following:
1. a brief summary of the play;
2. a close objective analysis of the performance; and
3. an evaluation of the stage design, acting, directing, and others.
Always remember that a review is not a mere summary of the plot or an opinion
on the script but also an evaluation of what you expected to see and what you have
actually seen. Although it is very essential to discuss the production as the basis of your
review, cautiously limit your review to a few important observations covered by your
thesis. Most importantly, know by heart that you are a critic and not a basher!
Before you attend the play, have this checklist handy:
Read the play. This saves you from needing to watch it over and over again.
Have a good sense of what a standard production is. This way, you will be able to
visualize characters, costume, set, and design.
While reading, identify possible problematic snippets of the play which you might
want to see in flesh and blood. Also, take note of any guide questions that your
teacher might provide before watching the play.
Once you are there, consider these points:
Be open-minded.
Look for deviations from your concept of a standard play. Ask questions. Ask.
Question. The following questions can guide you:
1. Why were the costumes and set designed that way?
2. Did the actors use limited or larger than life gestures and movement?
3. Were there effects (lights, sounds, machines, moving stage, audience
participation) used?
4. Were significant parts of the script weeded out in the production?
Jot down notes quickly!!! You will need your notes to substantiate your paper.
