Calipers &

Height Gauges

Exp # 1

OBJECTIVES

To be acquainted with different tools that may be

used to obtain small-scale linear measurements
(length, depth, diameter, thickness, etc.)
To become familiar with calipers.
To become familiar with height gauges.

Calipers

Caliper is an instrument with two legs used for

measuring linear dimensions.

HEIGHT GAUGES

A height gauge is a measuring device used

either for determining the height of something,
or for repetitious marking of items to be worked
on.
It used in metalworking or metrology to set or
measure vertical distances and also it measures
the height of an object.

TYPES OF HEIGHT
GAUGES

1. Vernier Height Gauge.

2. Digital Height Gauge.
3. Dial Height Gauge.

Procedure

Using veriner, and dial calipers, measure the dimensions of your part.

Procedures for using veriner caliper

Check that the vernier caliper correctly reads zero when the jaws
are closed.
Close the jaws around the object but do not over tighten.
When both locking screws are tightened the caliper can be removed
from the object and read without worrying if the jaws will shift
position.
You can read the main scale .
Note the number of divisions on the Vernier plate from its zero mark
to a line which exactly coincides with a line on the fixed bar.

Procedures for using Dial caliper

The same as veriner caliper except using dial indicator for reading
divisions rather than veriner scale.
