Save Mediact

As advocates of freedom of expression and communication, we vehemently

oppose Korean Film Council's recent decision to shut down the operations of
Mediact, the first public media center in South Korea. This is deplorable
especially since Mediact has been on the forefront of promoting
communication rights and democracy, media literacy, intellectual property
rights and public interest media In Korea.

Closing Mediact will not only retard the growth of the public media sector in
Korea, but more importantly it signals the frightening reversal of democratic
gains South Korea has achieved in the past couple of years. It is no secret that
there is a growing trend in the restriction of political freedom and the muzzling
of the press and media under the administration of Lee Myung-bak.

Unit 1 This is truly unfortunate and reprehensible. This decision can only be viewed as
an attack on freedom of expression and communications rights. Nothing more,
# 32
nothing less.
Esteban
As Mediact’s supporter and partner in the international community, we
Abada strongly urge the South Korean Government to instruct the Korean Film
Council to reverse this decision immediately. We also condemn the
Street,
undemocratic changes imposed by and the manipulation of the South Korean
Loyola government on the media and the press. This continued onslaught on freedom
of expression and communication must stop now.
