London leads charge into higher education is an article

written by Richard Adams, an education editor, and published

in The Guardian in 2013. The article is about an increase in
the number of high school leavers entering higher education.
The author makes a comparison between students going to
university in the present and in 1990 in London. He supports
this idea by including a number of statistics and by making
reference to authoritative figures specialized in the subject.
The author also mentions gender differences. There are more
girls likely to progress into higher education than men. Even
though there has been an important raise in the number of
students entering higher education, there is still a large gap of
students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds that needs
to be narrowed.

First-time English Language teachers need to learn on the

job is an article written by Peter Watkins and published in The
Guardian in 2013. The article is about how practitioners can
reflect upon their own practices, share their experiences and
doubts with the students and teachers, and adapt to different
teaching contexts once they are in class. The author supports
these concepts by explaining what each of them means. First,
he refers to the idea of reflecting upon teachers practices and
claims that this requires self-criticism of what and how they do
their job and assessment of possible alternatives, which can
be used for making it effective. Secondly, he develops the
idea of shearing by stating that teachers that work in groups
collaboratively will allow them to learn from each other and
allow ideas to be co-constructed. The author gives importance
to the idea of adapting too. He states that teachers must take
into account teaching in local contexts in which they are likely
to work. This will depend on the style of learning, class size,
social class, among others. He reinforces this idea by saying

that teachers cannot rely on a single teaching method and

they need to adapt their practices to suit the local context.
Even though learning on the job can be considered
challenging for initial language teachers, they need to
manage these basic teaching abilities developed by the
lecturer in this article.
