Grade: 5th

Date: March 3rd, 2015

Curriculum Area: Writing

Time: 11:15am

What I notice:
I have noticed that the teacher started out with a brand new
vocabulary word so he introduced it to the students by using the
SMART Board. The teacher gave the students the word, and an
example of the word used in the sentence. He had the definition of
the word covered so that the students could use the sight words
around it to determine what the word meant. Had students turn to
a partner and say what they think the word chronic means. He
then had the students write in their literacy journals by drawing
four boxes and had them write the word, prediction, definition,
and write their own sentence.

Thoughts, Questions, Connections to Methods Classes:

The process that the teacher took with this lesson I think is very
similar to what I am learning in my classes so far in the Education
program with the lesson plan format. The teacher gave his teacher
input and they did some guided practice with them in partners,
and finished it up with independent practice so they could practice
the new vocabulary word. Students struggled with figuring out the
word meant before the teacher showed them the definition, the
class also struggled making good detailed sentences with the
word because of the fact that chronic is an adjective.
