Cold War - The Origins of the Cold War are widely regarded to lie most directly in the relations
between the Soviet Union and the allies (the United States, Great Britain and France) in the years
19451947. Those events led to the Cold War that endured for just under half a century.
In 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first Republican president in 20 years. A war hero
rather than a career politician, he had a natural, common touch that made him widely popular. I
like Ike was the campaign slogan of the time. After serving as Supreme Commander of Allied
Forces in Western Europe during World War II, Eisenhower had been army chief of staff,
president of Columbia University, and military head of NATO before seeking the Republican
presidential nomination. Skillful at getting people to work together, he functioned as a strong
public spokesman and an executive manager somewhat removed from detailed policy making.
NASA - "An Act to provide for research into the problems of flight within and outside the Earth's
atmosphere, and for other purposes." With this simple preamble, the Congress and the President
of the United States created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on
October 1, 1958. NASA's birth was directly related to the pressures of national defense. After
World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in the Cold War, a broad
contest over the ideologies and allegiances of the nonaligned nations. During this period, space
exploration emerged as a major area of contest and became known as the space race. Its primary
pursuit was the pursuit of power.
Life in the 1950s America - The decade began with 25 million registered automobiles on the
road, most of which predated World War II and were in poor condition; no automobiles or parts
were produced during the war owing to rationing and restrictions. Clothing was greatly
influenced by rationing and limited quantities of fabrics, threads and needles, so the most popular
look was a simple outfit using as little of these much in demand resources as possible. Classic
pop, r&b, rock and roll, blues, country music, jazz and folk music. Education has changed a lot
in the past 60 years. While students in the 50s relied on slide rulers and reading accelerators to
help them learn, kids today have access to laptops, calculators and tablets. Sports were as popular
as ever in the 1950s. Baseball and boxing were huge, while football and golf were growing. The
Yankees dominated the decade as did Cleveland Browns. Rocky Marciano and Floyd
Patterson were the boxing superstars of the 1950s.

Homer Hickam, Jr -. (born February 19, 1943) is an American author, Vietnam veteran, and a
former NASA engineer. His autobiographical novel Rocket Boys: A Memoir, was a No. 1 New
York Times Best Seller, is studied in many American and international school systems, and was
the basis for the 1999 film October Sky.
Wernher Von Braun - (March 23, 1912 June 16, 1977) was a German and American
aerospace engineer and space architect. He was one of the leading figures in the development of
rocket technology in Germany during World War II and, subsequently, in the United States. He is
considered one of the "Fathers of Rocket Science"
Hodgkins disease - The exact cause of Hodgkin's disease is unknown, as is true for most types
of cancer. Studies have found an increased risk of Hodgkin's disease in people who have had the
Epstein-Barr virus. This has led researchers to think that viral factors may play a role in causing
this type of cancer. However, this is still not proven. Symptoms, a painless swelling of the
lymph nodes in the armpits, neck, or groin area persistent fatigue, fever and chills, night sweats,
weight loss (unintended), loss of appetite, severe itching (rarely), enlarged spleen, cough,
difficulty breathing and swelling of the legs. For stages 1 and 2, the common therapy is radiation.
For stages 3 and 4, the primary treatment is chemotherapy, occasionally followed by radiation. If
a relapse occurs after chemotherapy treatment, then it will be treated again.
Coal Mining - Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used
to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from
iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a
coal mine and its structures are a colliery. There are a great many risks to your health which can
be linked to coal mining operations. Though there are obvious workplace hazards associated with
working in a coal mine, these are not the only risks associated with mining activities. Simply
living within proximity of a mine can actually cause a variety of health concerns, and both types
of mining (deep and surface) pose their own set of problems. We used to have men do it
themselves but now we have machines because too many people had lost their lives.
