Rule # 5
Either/ or used in a sentence in the affirmative sense when referring to a choice between two
possibilities.
Neither/ nor- used in a sentence in the negative sense when you want to say that two or more things
are not true.
Compound subjects connected by either-or, neither-nor takes singular verbs if the subjects are singular,
plural verbs if the subjects are plural.
Example:
Either-or
1. Either Ericka or John plays badminton.
2. 2. Either the priests or the nuns attend the conference.
Neither-nor
1. Neither Abigail nor Patrick agrees with their fathers decision.
2. Neither her friends nor her sisters are going to join the parade.
But if the subjects are different in number, the verbs agree with the nearest subject.
Example:
1. Neither the plates nor the serving bowl goes on that shelf.
2. Neither the serving bowl nor the plates go on that shelf.
