Shibuilding Industry and it's Future

Abstract
Because of global economic crisis that has been triggered in the second half of 2008, world
shipbuilding industry has entered in a severe recession. It still continues as it can be seen in the data of
world cargo carrier's fleet. Shipbuilding Industry of Turkey has received its share eminently from the
current crisis. Our shipyards which have increased their capacity before the crisis, have to survive now
with much lower capacity. When the significiant effects of current global crisis on Turkey's
Shipbuilding Industry observed, it is clear that the industry has no leading strategy which can define
the most suitable directions or choices that we may follow. Without a leading strategy, all efforts of the
industry stay diffused and not effective. The industry therefore cannot have a clear vision of upcoming
investment opportunities. In this article, five means of the sector in Turkey is explained and the crucial
factors of leading strategy of the industry is emphasized. Depending on these factors, how Turkey's
shipbuilding industry can enter offshore structures market, is also considered. Turkey's current
activities for offshore energy in Blacksea and other offshore activities in the close periphery of Turkey
support to enter offshore structures industry. Offshore industry activities will increase the knowledge,
and the technology, will broaden building facilities of Turkey's Shipbuilding Industry. Within this
scope, we shared some numerical datas and future trends in the global and regional market of offshore
industry including support vessels and wind turbines. The advices are discribed for a leading strategy
of the shipbuilding industry.
