Topic: Symmetry
PA or National Core Standard: LM 3.5 Show an awareness of symmetry
Behavioral Objective:
Given mirrors, the student will be able to (TSWBAT) find
symmetrical shapes in real-life contexts with 90% accuracy.
Given real-life symmetrical objects, the students will be able to find
and identify real-life symmetrical objects to 80% accuracy.
Material:
Construction papers
- cut out in the shapes of leaves, pumpkins, acorns.
Mirrors
Procedure:
Activity 1: If the weather allows held outside
1. Ask the students if they remember what symmetry means, and guide
them to say that symmetrical objects are the same on either side when cut
in half or folded in the right way.
2. Show them a set of fall season pictures to see if they can distinguish
between symmetrical objects and non-symmetrical objects.
3. Show students shapes of fall leaves, pumpkins, acorns on a board and see
if they can distinguish whether it is symmetrical or not.
4. Take the halves of the shapes and hide the other halves throughout the
preschool room.
5. Give each student a mirror.
6. Putting the mirror next to the symmetrical line, show the children that the
reflection creates the whole shape.
7. Instruct children to find the halves of the shapes hidden throughout the
room.
