Bottle Book Project
Bottle Book Project
Students will create a bottle they might find washed up on shore at the ocean. They will decorate the bottle with
symbols that speak to the text, including multiple story elements. The book they select should be an AR book of
their choice.
Supplies:
2 liter bottle
Materials to cover / decorate
Planning Information
On the outside of your bottle, you will have to include the following:
- title of the book
- author of the book
- a background that indicates the setting (either general setting or a specific scene in the book). This will
cover the entire bottle.
- symbols that represent the characters, plot, theme, setting, and conflict of the book
- you will also select another symbol that is your choice (could be another conflict, another setting, a third
character, etc.)
- the symbols should clearly represent what you choose to represent, and signify deep thinking
- you must explain your thinking on the symbols (the in-depth reasons you picked them) during your presentation.
Write out your reasons on note cards.
Symbol Examples: For the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, someone might use a sled for Jonas, to indicate his
experience in memory and the end of the novel. For the book Curses and Smoke by Vicky Alvear Shecter,
someone might use a curse tablet to signify one of the conflicts in the story. For your particular book, you will
need to choose 7 symbols and be able to explain why they are significant to the book. You will want to start with
the bottle planning sheet!
