There are five codes of ethics that apply to Radiation Therapy. In summary, the
first states all patients should be treated with the utmost respect. An example of this
would be asking the patient how theyre doing considering they are probably going

through a lot. Second, the therapist must give the care required without being
discriminating or biased towards any patient based on the type of disease they have, the
color of their skin, sex, religion or economical status. An example of this would be
treating a patient the same even if they have a different religious view than the therapist.
Third, states the therapist acts in assumes responsibility for professional decisions and
acts in the best interest of the patient. (ASRT.org, 1998). A radiation therapist should
always act in the best interest of the patient; the patient is their job.
Forth, the therapist remains in the scope of practice that is Radiation Therapy.
This considers only acting on things the therapist is trained to do. Lastly, the therapist
strives to continue to learn more and maintain the knowledge of their practice.
Technology is always changing, as are methods of treatment. It is crucial for everyone in
healthcare, including radiation therapists to continue their education in every way
possible.
The Radiation Therapist Code of Ethics can be applied to every radiation therapist
in everyday situations and patient interactions. The Code of Ethics is the backbone of
Radiation Therapy. If an individual spends the time and money becoming a radiation
therapist, the person should want to do all of the things the Code of Ethics states. The
therapist should want to respect the patient, deliver the proper and best care to all, assess
situations to their best judgment, stay within their scope of practice and continue their
knowledge on the subject so they can enhance the care that is given.
Consequences in violating the Code of Ethics vary. Punishment depending on
what was committed. Violating a rule could result in the professionals license or
certificate being denied, suspended or placed on a probation period, and sometimes even

revoked. Any incidents dealing with the mistreatment of patients must be reported
immediately. In conclusion the Code of Ethics for Radiation Therapy must not be over
looked and should be followed.
