Abstract
The rapid increase in available storage fueled the demand for storage. Improvements in
conventional memory technologies semiconductor memories have managed to keep pace with
the demand for bigger, faster memories. However, strong evidence indicates that these twodimensional surface-storage technologies are approaching fundamental limits that may be
difficult to overcome, such as the wavelength of light and the thermal stability of stored bits. An
alternative approach for next-generation memories is to store data in three dimensions.
Holographic data storage is the methodology that comes under Optical data storage. In order to
increase storage capabilities, a new optical storage method is being considered called
holographic memory that will go beneath the surface and use the volume of the recording
medium for storage, instead of only the surface area. This paper presents an overview on volume
holographic digital data storage. Innovations, developments, and new insights gained in the
design and operation of working storage platforms, novel optical components and techniques.
