Syllable is a group of one or more


sounds. The essential part of syllable is
vowel sound (V). Some syllable are just one
vowel sounds. For example;

What is syllable?

Syllable are usually described as


consisting of a centre which has little or no
obstruction to airflow and sound
comparatively loud; before and after centre
(that is, at the bigining and end of the
syllable).

The structure of English syllable

Onset:

the beginning sounds of the


syllable; These are always consonants in
English.
Rhyme (or rime): the rest of the syllable,
after the onset (the underlined portions of
the words above). The rhyme can also be
divided up: Rhyme = nucleus + coda
A nucleus must be present in order for a syllable
to be present. Most syllable nuclei are vowels.
Coda is the optional final part of a syllable.

'read', 'flop', 'strap' and 'window' are as
follows (IPA symbols are used to show the
sounds in the word/syllable):
read = one syllable
Onset = [ r ]
Rhyme = [ id ]

of two or more consonants in a syllable.
There are two positions of consonant
clusters:
- initial position : a position that begins a
syllable
- final position : a position that follows a
vowel and ends a syllable.

These clusters have the following positions:

- Final
- Post Final 1

final consonant clusters are sonorant (stops,


fricatives, affricate) and obstruent (nasal, glide,
liquid)
Three consonant clusters consist of :
- pre final, final , post final , as in helped,
banks
- final, post final 1, post final 2, as in fifths,
next
Four consonant clusters consist of :
- pre final, final, post final 1, post final 2, as in
twelfths , prompts
- final, post final 1, post final 2, post final 3, as
in sixths , texts.
