REAL-ly Green Math

A Real-Life Ratio and Rate Project

This project will require you to research a topic of interest to you and find a ratio
or rate that involves being environmentally conscientious. You will create
calculations to share with others that are equivalent to the original rate. The
primary goal of this project is to connect math facts from the world around us to
quantities that we are able to visualize.
Original Fact

/ 10

Find one fact as your starting point from a reliable source. You must correctly reference your
source (publishing information, printing dates, specific web site).

Equivalent Facts

/ 30

Calculate at least seven other equivalent rates using appropriate units. (For example: per
second, hour, day, week, month, year, decade, lifetime, etc) For the maximum number of points
in the category, you must include at least two visualizations. In other words, create sentences
that help someone picture how large your information can get.

Calculation Sheet

/ 30

Include all of your calculations for the project. The work for all equivalent rates should be
clearly set up as a proportion and solved using an equation. Calculators may be used with all
work and steps neatly shown. All items should be labeled with appropriate units used. This may
be typed or neatly handwritten. You must submit a paper copy of this sheet prior to your
presentation.

Electronic Presentation
Create an electronic presentation to share your information. This presentation should be
appealing to your viewers.
