The movie The Social Network provides us not only the story of how

a mega company was formed, it also gives us a lesson about business

law by illustrating a string of lawsuits, which involve his best friend
Eduardo Saverin. The first legal issue is intellectual property theft. In
the movie, the Winkelvoss brothers accused Mr. Zuckerberg to steal
their idea called Harvard Connection (later changed into Connection U),
and then transformed it to what we call Facebook today. This is a really
difficult situation because even though Mr. Zuckerberg came up with
the idea of Facebook after a discussion with the Winkelvoss brothers,
that idea is not so much different from a created website called Match,
which is a dating website. Another legal issue that went through my
mind is partnership agreement. Mr. Saverin was the first to invest in
the website and helped Mr. Zuckerberg to launch it. Besides the initial
investment, Mr. Saverin also provided further financial support when
Mr. Zuckerberg decided to move the company to California with his
programmers. However, from the movie, I could not find any written
agreement on their partnership, which I believe to be a huge mistake.
Moreover, Mr. Zuckerbeg and his new partner, Sean Parker, did not
notice Mr. Saverin when they approve new investors and/or partners
into the company. All in all, there are two areas of business law that the
movie associated with, intellectual property protection and partnership
agreement.
