SECTION — A (READING ) 15 MARKS 1.Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: 6 marks 1. In today’s fiercely competitive business environment, companies need to communicate information pertaining to a whole range of issues in a lucid and precise manner to their customers. 2. This is particularly so in the case of companies which do business in areas such as manufacturing, information technology (IT),engineering products and services - companies whose products and services say not be understood by a customer not familiar with its technical aspects. ‘These communication materials are prepared in a company these days by “technical writers” people \ ho can effectively communicate to an intended audience. 4. The skills of a technical writer are being increasingly sought for preparing marketing documents such as brochures, case studies, website content and media kits and for the preparation of a whole of ‘manuals.Though technical writers in a company do a good portion of such work, the trend now is to ‘outsource technical writing to free-lancers. 5. Technical writing and writing text-books are poles apart. The former is aimed at those who do not have an in-depth knowledge about a product and hence should be direct and lucid. An overdose of technical terms and jargon would only add to the confusion of the customer. 6. The basic requirement for being a technical writer is near-total mastery over English language.A technical writer should be natural in creative writing and needs to be an expert in using Business English. 7. This simply means that those with a Bachelor's degree in English Literature along with a diploma /degree in Journalism and having a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA) are ideal candidate for being employed as technical writers. 8. According to Joe Winston ,Chief of Executive Officer of ‘I-manager’, speaking ability is not imperative for a technical writer. All that one needs is the talent to write in a simple and effective manner. Many have inhibitions in speaking English but their writing skills would be very sharp. B a 9. ‘Technical writing would be a good option for such people. If a candidate is to be assigned the task of preparing high-end technical manuals, he/she is required to have higher qualification such as an M.A/M-Phil in English Literature and a degree such asM.C.A. 10. Companies look for such qualifications because technical writers first need to understand the technical information themselves, before trying to communicate it in de-jargonised language to the potential customers. LL. However,it is also true that many companies provide rigorous on-the-job training to fresh technical writers before allowing them to graduate to high-end products. 12, Though the demand for good technical writers has risen sharply over the years, the emphasis is never on numbers but on skills. 13, They point out that even graduate of English literature are often found wanting when it comes to creative and effective writing. 14, Merely having the right mix of writing and comprehension skills is not sufficient. A technical writer should keep his ‘writing blades’ constantly sharpened. It means untold hours of reading up the latest in the technological trends and ceaseless honing of one’s Business English and writing skills. The nature ~ technical writing is such that a writer has to be the peak of his expressive powers in each piece of writing ne produces. a 15. A career in technical writing is seen as a good choice for women mainly because it is widely held that women are more adept at creative writing than men and the job does not entail ‘graveyard shifts’ or 16, A beginner can expect to be paid anywhere between Rs.8,000 to Rs 15,000 a month. Technical writers usvally join as executive technical writers and then go on to become senior technical writers , team leaders, documentation heads and some even manage to make it to a management job within a decade. As in most private sector jobs, merit is the main criterion for rise in job and not necessarily the number of years one has put in. .1.Based on your reading of the above passage, answer the following questions briefly : 6marks (@What is the need of technical writing in today’s world ? im (b)What is the nature of the job of a technical writer ? im u (¢) Whom does the technical writing aim at ? Im (@Wohat should be the academic qualification of a technical writer ? Im (OA technical writer should be: Im i) a creative writer ii) an expert in Business English iiiJable to write in a simple & effective manner iv) all the above (8 ‘Technical writing’ is a good career for women because: Im ‘they are more expressive in nature. ii)they understand the technical information better. 2 iti)they are better creative writers & it does not require heavy travelling. ivythey may have inhibitions in speaking but writing skills would be very sharp. 1.2 Find words in the above passage which convey meanings similar to the words given below: 2m i)Continuous /without stopping (from para 12-14) Im ii) difficult (from paral4 -16 ) Im 2.Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow : Im Starting from the steam engine to the supercomputer, why is it that most of the discoveries of the last two centuries have all been in the west ? Is it because there were not many in the eastern hemisphere to think out or innovate ? Or is it because though there was someone who did something back here, we were too late to realize it or acknowledge it ?In fact not all of the blame should go to us . There have been discoveries here tag but may be we overlooked them or were too late to acknowledge them. We still believe there have been \ tentions in this part of the world but because of the delay in accepting such inventions the West copied them and thus been credited with their achievements. India has been credited with being a storchouse of intellectual capital.Indians have a strong presence in NASA and even companies like the Microsoft and IBM. Yet India still lags behind in the field of innovation despite having a rich history.Indians invented the numerical ‘zero’ which is known to everyone, Even Albert Einstein also said that no worthwhile scientific discovery would have been possible without the Indians ‘teaching the world to count. Just knowledge is not enough. It has to be cultivated and put to use.Otherwise, it is like having a Pentium III which is used just for typing. To put to use this knowledge adequately, proper opportunities also need to be provided. This is where the role of the government and the overall support for human infrastructure comes in. This implies providing adequate technology, setting up the right atmosphere right from the school level to (ify and promote such talent-This is what our immediate challenge should be. On the industry side they have a new assignment to embark on. For the first four decades India has been a seller’s market. For the producer he just had to manufacture his goods and there was always a ready taker. For industry innovation is not a way of business but a lifeline to exist in the business. With innovation comes in the thrust on research and development. This is another of the neglected aspects in Indian industry Strangely, the general concept among many is that R&D is basically for the pharmaceuticals and chemicals industry. ‘Thus, leading from here we find that is one zone where the share on the total expenditure is minuscule. This may be because of the dedicated investments and time frame required with no guarantee of results Unfortunately our short sightedness prevents us from judging the gains from such investments in the ong run. One thing in place is India is an abundantly rich nation of natural resources But the sad thing that follows is we depend so heavily on it Imagine what it would have been had India used these resources, added technology and innovation and produced. ‘The green revolution has been a perfect example of how natural resources combined with technology can convert a nation in a span of two decades to a food surplus economy. 3 In the end we artive.on the human contribution factor.Alll what has been discussed above would be or is a result of human zeal and contribution. This calls for a further debate on how we should ensure that not only India is an information rich country but also where knowledge is tested and put to work and further the goals are achieved through such creativity.Innovation is a never ending process that lubricates the wheels of growth of any nation developing or developed. 2.1. Marks : 90 Code : 110302 Duration : 3 Hours General Instructions 1. This paper consists of four sections — A, B, C and D. All sections are compulsory. 2. Separate instructions are given with each section and question, wherever necessary. Read these instructions carefully dnd follow them faithfully. 3. Do not exceed the prescribed word limit while answering the questions. SECTION A - READING QI. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. 1. Our Earth is like a greenhouse, with one difference. A greenhouse is encased in glass, while the Earth is encased in a thin blanket of carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide serves (@Sythe same function for the earth as does glass for a greenhouse. It helps to keep the Earth warm. Scientists call it the ‘greenhouse effect’. 2. The amount of carbon dioxide in the air is only .03 per cent, yet all plant and animal life depends on it. The percentage of carbon dioxide in the air is almost kept constant by a series of natural processes. We call it the carbon (or carbon dioxide) cycle. 3. Carbon dioxide is added to the atmosphere by two main processes — breathing and buming. All living things breathe out carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The air breathed in contains only .03 per cent carbon dioxide, whereas the air breathed out contains 4 per cent, Thus breathing leads to increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. Also large quantities of carbon dioxide are produced by the burning of wood, coal and oil. 4. The main way in which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere is by photosynthesis. It is a process by which green plants with the help of sunlight break up Page | of 8 46 ‘s ‘carbon dioxide into carbon and oxygen. Carbon is retained by plants as their food, and they set free oxygen for the use of animals. All animals depend, directly or indirectly, on plants for their food and all plants in turn dépend on carbon dioxide breathed out by animals. Carbon dioxide (CO,) is removed from the atmosphere by water aso. This gas is moderately soluble in water. Thus our rivers, lakes and seas also take up a lot of * carbon dioxide from the air. Water animals use this dissolved carbon dioxide to make their shells. When these animals breathe or die and decay, carbon dioxide is released back into the atmosphere. Thus the cycle is completed. ra » COp is also used up in the formation of rocks that give us coal. When this coal is bumed, COp again goes back to the air. Thus we see that nature has designed a perfect cycle to keep the percentage of carbon dioxide in the air at a constant level. _ A significant property of carbon dioxide is that, tike glass, it allows more heat to pass. into the Earth’s atmosphere than to pass out. If the amount of carbon dioxide in the air - were to double, the temperature of the Earth would rise by 3° Celsius and the polar ice caps would start melting. The level of seas would rise and many an island would disappear under the surface of water. If the amount of carbon dioxide in the air dropped, The Farth’s temperature would fall and the icecaps would expand. The level of water in our seas, rivers and wells would go down end there would be @ great shortage of water. Thus it is very important that the balance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is not disturbed. If too many of the world’s forests were cut down, there would be fewer plants to consume the carbon dioxide that is being constantly added to the atmosphere. This means more of it would stay in the atmosphere and become harmfol for us. Similarly, the uncontrolled burning of coal, wod! and other fuels would add the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The tefiiperature of the Earth would rise, endangering the life of all plants and animals. >) 1.1 On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer the following questions: 10 1. What is the normal percentage of carbon dioxide in the air? 2, What factors add the amount of carbon dioxide in the air? 3, Name two of the things that take up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere? 4, What do water animals use carbon dioxide for? 5. Why is it important to maintain the balance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Page 2 of 8 i bg 1.2 Identify words from the passage which mean the same as the following: 2 1. To rotten (Para 5) 2. It grows best in the coastal lands, The chief producing areas are West Aftica, the West Indies and South ‘America, More than half of the world’s cocoa comes from West Africa. The trees are grown ffom seed and have to be raised carefully as they are very delicte. When young, they need protection from direct sun and Wind, They are provided the shade of “other trees which also act as a windbreak. 2, Cocoa trees do not bear their full crop until they are about 12 to 15 years old. When grown on plantations, they are pruned to 25 feet. In the wild they can grow to 50 feet and live about 16 years. A feature of the tree is that flowers grow on the trank, not on the branches of the tree. These flowers grow throughout the year. 3, When the fruit is ripe, large reddish pods hang ali over the tree. It takes about six months for the pods to ripen. The ripe pods are 6 to 10 inches long, Each pod contains 20 to 40 seeds (beens) that are about the size of almonds. There are usually two harvests during the year, one large and one small. The pods are harvested whenever they are ripe. The picker uses a sharp knife to cut the ripe pods from the trees. ‘The pods are collected into heaps and are then split open in order to remove the beans. “The beans are covered with a thick white pulp. They don’t have the same flavour you discover when you bite into a chocolate cookie. A lot of processing is needed to get that marvelous chocolate taste. 4, First of all, the pulp has to be removed from the beans. The bitter-tasting seeds and pulp are heated or placed in the hot sun. The heat turns the pulp into liquid that is drained from the beans. After the bearis are thoroughly dried, they turn to @ dark chocolate colour and are shipped to candy factories all over the world. The. flavour from these beans is similar to the sweet smell of chocolate in a candy bar. However, the beans are not ready yet to eat. e When chocolate beans arrive at factories they are cleaned thoroughly. Then they are roasted in a revolving oven which cracks them. The shells ate semoved with the help of a current of air. Now we are left with edible pieces called ‘nibs’, These nibs contain Page 3 of 8 Leg about 54 per cent fat called cocoa butter. SECTION A (READING) 415 Marks Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: 8 Each day is a chance to invest in life; a chance to renew yourself. To shed yesterday's skin. To unburden yourself. To get rid of yesterday's hurt. Be glad of life each day as it gives you a chance to work, love and play; to look at the sun. And then when the sun sets, dor't ory — the tears will make you miss the beauty of the stars. Life moves on and if you don't stop and look at the wonders already present in your life, you will miss life altogether. Think of big thoughts but relish the small joys life offers you each day. May be it's as simple as smiling at someone. For, that could be the last day of life — for you or for her. A small genuine act from you will cost you nothing but it could mean everything to somebody that day. Life is a succession of moments. Live each moment. Life has no romance without risk, Any action carries some amount of risk, may be less or more, but the element of risk is always present. 4. If there is no wind, row. Make things happen rather than let things happen. One can give nothing whatsoever without giving oneself, risking oneself. The most important thing in life is not what you get but what you give. Once a preacher was called at the home of a very poor family. When he came out, he found one son admiring his new car, so the preacher explained that he had received it from his brother. Most lads would say, “I wish | had a brother like that.” But this one said, “Mister, I wish | could be a brother like that.” 5. If you are not enjoying this journey, for sure you won't enjoy the destination. It will become a moment fo dread, not a moment you can actually look forward to. It's not what happens that determines our future, but what you do about what happens, that counts. Conquer the mind and you conquer the world. Looking back strains your neck muscles. Similarly, living in the past strains your life. Don’t dwell on the past, have faith in yourself and you will have faith in others. Fulfil your destiny. Remember, no one can make you unhappy without your consent. The way you cope with life, is what makes the difference. Even peace of mind is not the absence of conflict but the ability to cope with it. You have to reach out to other people. That will teach you to forgive people and also forgive yourself. Forgiveness means letting go of the past. Compassion is about stepping outside yourself. A kind compassionate act is often its own reward. Live your life without complaining, just like the tree. 4.1 Read the questions given below and write the option you consider the most appropriate in your answer sheet: (5 marks) (a) Why should we be glad of each day? ‘ i. Series Achievement Inheritance happiness (8) Find words in the above passage which convey the same meaning as the following: 3 i Charm (Para 3) Hi, Decides (Para 5) ili. Victory (Para 6) Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: 7 In the last four decades, there has been an alarming rise in the number of lower middle and middie class women who seek employment to supplement their household income. While there is little doubt that women from the lower ranks of society have always had to work in the fields or in petty jobs to sustain themselves and their families, there were strong objections and a marked reluctance among the middle classes to allow women to step out of the house to earn a living, Their basic role continued to be gender based, as daughter, wife and mother. Much has changed since independence. . Education, great opportunities for acquiring diverse skills, growing urbanization, rise in cost of living, growing aspiration for a better standard of living ere among the many factors that have led to a continual rise in the number of women to seek a job, whether at home or outside. In the process, erstwhile prejudices and barriers about women entering certain professions are breaking down. This is particularly manifest in urban areas, where the demands of city life and its impersonal character made it simpler. Estimates show that there has been a 2.68% raise in women's participation in the total work force in 1991. While women accounted for 25.89% of the work force in 1981, it went up to 28.57% in 1991.
