When the news reporter said "Shopkeepers are opening their doors bringing out blankets and
cups of tea" I just smiled. It's like yes. That's Britain for you. Tea solves everything"
You have all seen big fires, but I doubt if you have ever seen the whole horizon of a city lined
with great fires - scores of them, perhaps hundreds. There was something inspiring just in the
awful savagery of it.
In the 1940s most Londoners lived in constant fear of bombs being dropped by Germans onto
their city.
On September 7th, 1940, Evelyn Shaw was finished burning her souffle when the sirens went
off. She wanted to be a chef like Auguste Escoffier and to bring her brother back home from the
war. She spent her nights praying for her brother not to get killed on the front.
On September 7th, 1940, while Evelyn was burning her souffle, Rose Tyler sat knitting a
sweater for her cat, Grnka, who was missing. She was old so she didnt have many dreams,
save seeing her cat home safe. The last war had taken her husband and she feared this one
would take her cat.
On September 7th, 1940, while Evelyn was burning her souffle and Rose was knitting her
sweater, Cole Barker was taking the Underground to get back home. His parents had not been
able to provide for him growing up, so he worked his hardest to ensure his daughter had the
best.
On September 7th, 1940, while Evelyn was burning her souffle, Rose was knitting her sweater,
and Barker was taking the train, Kevin Ryan was writing a story about a cat named Grnka, who
was stuck in a tree. He mostly covered local news, but he wanted to write a cover story in the
Daily Herald. He thought that the war would give him an opportunity for a bigger story.
On September 7th, 1940, Germans started dropping bombs over London. The bombing
continued for nine months. By May 11, 1941, Evelyn, Rose, Barker, and Kevin had all been
killed, along with more than 30,000 other Londoners.
Despite being afraid for their lives, many Londoners felt inspired by their town being burned to
flames. They felt that they needed to seize the day before they died and joined their neighbors.
